Nik software is great however since Google purchased them they do not appear to be developing it further. Hope Google did not just purchase them for the technology.

It is being updated, Analog Efex Pro was added then more recently Analog Efex Pro 2 was added.

I do mostly portraits and have both Nik Silver Efex 2 and the Topaz B&W filter and I must say that the Topaz filter generally does a better job than the Nik. That is only a personal opinion of course.

Good morning. I assume you bought the Nik Collection that includes several filters. When Google bought Nik Software, it began offering the collection for $149 -- a bargain.

Nik Silver Efex 2 has become, I believe, the standard plug-in filter for developing black-and-white photographs. I use it and some of the other filters, like Color Efex Pro, Define, Sharpening for Output, and Viveza.

Color Efex Pro works a little wonder with most landscape photographs, especially the Tonal Contrast option, to introduce color contrast for making a photograph stand out.

I cannot say enough good about the Nik Software Collection. I recommend any photographer looking for a versatile set of filters to consider the Nik Collection from Google.

This review says more in praise of the Nik Collection:

Nik was very good and still is. When Google stepped in and bought it, that was their and our demise. They dropped the price and left the store! We still use it every day but updates and seminars are out! I have used Nik for over 10 years and have seen them grow and really improve. That growth is now done thanks to Google.

Yep that is a real possibility and, they quit making Nikon's Capture NX2 software, leaving Nikon in a lurch. Nikon is trying desperately to get their new version up and running using in house developers. The early release shows issues but Nikon is aware of them and working to fix them. However the new version is probably not ready for prime time yet. I still use my version of Capture NX2 in addition to Lightroom and now PS CC. (among others.. sorry I collect software the way some of you collect lenses.. lol)

So what was the point of the purchase by Google?

Not sure, Google was buying up companies that they thought they could make money with, or maybe they thought that they could offer it to Android users for their Android phone / pad cameras.

How do we know that? Was there a public promise that it would never be updated?

Great software. The sharpener pro is the best I have found and silver efex is also the tops.

I like Sharpener Pro also because it has a slider for adjusting the amount of sharpness after the sharpening effect. I enlarge the image to 100 percent and then move the slider until the degree of sharpness looks right to my eye.

Quite correct. There has been NOTHING to suggest that Google will not be updating the suite. There has been many indications that the suite is alive and well.

Why do people feel the need to do this; put out false information. This is just like what people did with Photoshop. I, personally, dislike Adobe, the company, but the misinformation about the cloud version was so utterly idiotic, it bordered on humorous.

Ditto.

After all, what business interest would it serve to buy the Nik software and then let it sit unimproved?

Goggle likes to buy anything that will give them power and money. Yes there are updates, but daily live seminars are out the window, only junk on Google's Utube. This dynamic pursuit of corporate power does not make a better product and a better education. Google is not photo friendly. They are certainly less than Adobe. I have been with NIK for over 14 years. Yes they made their stuff better for photographers like you and me, Google makes it better for themselves. Mark my words.
