Hi all
Going to Portland, Bar Harbor, St Johns and Halifax in September. Can anyone tell me about the weather avg temps, fall foliage and places I should not miss to photograph? This was supposed to be a photography workshop but the photographer teaching the workshop backed out so my husband and I are continuing on our own. Taking a 28-300 lens, flash, tripod, Nikon D 600 any other suggestions on camera equipment? Oh and does anyone know of nice photography shops along the way that I could entice my hubby into buying me something nice for my birthday!
It has been years but some things are constant Acadia Park and everything around it. Somes Sound only Fiord on East coast of USA. Take mail boat to Little Cranberry Island Southwest Harbor and Hinckley Boat Yards and Peggy's Cove in Nova Scotia
September can be a little early for the colors, so I'd recommend starting your trip North, in Canada, and working your way down. That's easy if your driving. All coastal regions off great photo ops. Have a good time.
please go to the Maine tourist sight if you haven't already. They will send you for free a very thick book. There is a nice camera store in Portland. In Ogunquit, south of Portland her is camera shop pretty much for Nikon users. North of Portland in Bath there is another great tourist info office. Next to the Bath Iron Works where they build ships for the Navy. Have extre cards and batteries. There is something around every corner. September in the north can be in low 60's and 50's. Nova Scotia is on our bucket list. Came back from there in May, will be back in August and again in late October. Love it. I Have to agree with Sailor, not much color in September on the Maine end.

Did that trip on a cruise sans Portland. Could be a little cool, especially at night. Nothing intolerable if you're prepared.
Bar Harbor...boats in the harbor, shops, THE HARBOR itself.
St. John's...boats, again, Acadia National Park, Cadillac mountain, and coastal scenes. The Bay of Fundy with its tidal bore. Personally, I didn't see that but I did see a video. Nothing to get excited about as a photographer, but interesting from a scientific point of view.
Nova Scotia...Don't miss Peggy's Cove. Probably one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen. The skies are so blue you wouldn't believe it. There's also the lighthouse at Peggy's Cove.
Speaking if lighthouses, there are lighthouses all throughout the areas you're visiting.
Your 28-300 should be all you need, especially if you want to travel light.
All my shots were taken with a dinky little Canon IS1400 P&S.
Be prepared to stop frequently for photo ops, and take extra SD cards.
One last thing...might want to take a P&S, as a backup.

Did that trip in late September on a cruise out of Quebec City a couple years back. Fall foliage was spectacular. Lots of very photogenic places to visit. Weather was cool but not cold during the day and of course cooler at night. If you like Mussels and Lobster ...., you're in heaven!

When In Sept? The beginning is too early, for fall colors. Middle or end is better. A fast 50mm prime and a CPL is a good idea. Average temps are about 50 or so ,day time, Nights can get cold. perhaps below 30 or maybe colder. Lobsta is a must as well as Chowda

If you like harbor tours, each port on your list has some nice ones (all sailboats except St. John). My most memorable one was the "SILVA" out of Halifax - a STEEL HULLED sailboat. Tour guide provided a great history of Halifax including details of the huge explosion in the harbor around the end of WWI. The Silva had sailed around the world 4 times at the time of my visit (2011). If you are into history of the Titanic, the cemetery there is home to a number of victims. Top of Cadillac Mtn is a must when in Bar Harbor. Please observe local pronunciation of the place - "Ba Habba". :)
I presume you meant St. John (New Brunswick), not St. John's, Newfoundland. If you do end up in St. John's, send me a PM!
One small item to add to your kit: a remote shutter release for night shots - harbours, water reflections, sunsets/sunrises etc. But you can also do that with a delayed shutter (to minimize movement). I still prefer a remote though. Bon voyage!

Yes St John's (New Brunswick). We should be docking on Sept 22 from 7am to 4 pm. Current tour takes in Bay of Fundy, St. Martin and St John The old City Market. The tour is 5 hours so we should have plenty of free time.
Do a search for the Ministry of Tourism for each province that you will be visiting (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland). There should be tons of info on their sites that will answer most, if not all, of your questions.
