Thanks :)

Oh Linda,
You have my sympathy. I know how much you love that camera. Actually, your photos and recommendations greatly influenced me to purchase one when I "needed" a bridge camera.
I looked at the Canon forum I stumbled on a while ago to see if anything jumped out at me. The only thing I spotted was someone said their LCD was black. After a bit of back and forth, someone suggested that the poster might have inadvertently switched to EVF. You have probably already checked for this, but it's all I've got right now.
Ignore the previous 2 sentences. I just reread your post and that CANNOT be the problem. Sorry, I'm upset for you.
Please keep us posted on your progress or lack thereof.
Mikey

So sorry, Linda. Can you shoot with the view finder? Good luck!

No, it's black too. I'll be speaking with Canon in a few minutes.

That's great to hear! I'll be speaking with them shortly.

Linda, call Canon and calmly explain the situation to them. May is not a long time to be off warranty and it's very likely they will still treat and honor this issue as a warranty repair.
Canon is generally very good about these types of things.

Several years ago I called because my waterproof D10 got water into it after a day at the beach. They said... it's not supposed to do that. I agreed and despite it being a month or two past warranty they immediately sent me a brand new one, didn't even bother with a repair attempt.
Good luck.

Thank you all. Canon said ship it to them (I'm in WA, their center for Powershot is in VA!) and they'll let me know. Tech on phone said symptoms indicate might be the "imaging center" rather than LCD.

After filling out online repair form, the result says "under warranty," so that sounds promising!

Awesome, seems that the "imaging center" can't handle so many eagles. :D

Awesome. Sounds like good news!
Maybe I should lay off the egrets over here to avoid a similar failure of the "imaging center" - whatever that may be. Google - here I come!

In middle of shooting yesterday, my screen suddenly went black. It acts exactly as if I have the lens cap on. It attempts to meter and focus. I can shoot jpg or raw, and I can even export the files to my computer, but all I get is what I see on the LCD: BLACK.

I'll be calling Canon in a couple of hours, but wondered if anyone knows what happened in the meantime.

I've actually shot over 50,000 images in a little over a year! Yep, warranty just expired in May :-(

Ouch!!!

Try resetting to all the camera defaults. 8-)

There are a lot of folks here eager to find out what happens with this. So many complaints about lousy, uncaring manufacturers, might be nice to have a story with a positive outcome here! I'll keep my fingers crossed.

You didn't mention if you can still use the view finder. It sounds to me like the wire(S) that go from the body to the here flip screen might have parted company.

As an avid SX50 shooter myself, I can truly feel yor pain! You've done some really good photography with that camera. I'll bet the Canon folks will treat you better than you are expecting.

Keep us posted.

Thank you all so much.

Viewfinder is unusable too. I did try re-setting to factory defaults. At any rate, it is on its way to Virginia as we speak.

Thankfully, I have an SLR + almost all the bird and critter babies are grown and not in need of daily photographing :)
