My Canon SX50 has croaked!

In middle of shooting yesterday, my screen suddenly went black. It acts exactly as if I have the lens cap on. It attempts to meter and focus. I can shoot jpg or raw, and I can even export the files to my computer, but all I get is what I see on the LCD: BLACK.

I'll be calling Canon in a couple of hours, but wondered if anyone knows what happened in the meantime.

I've actually shot over 50,000 images in a little over a year! Yep, warranty just expired in May :-(

If it's dead, send it back to Canon for $$ off to purchase a new one.

In middle of shooting yesterday, my screen suddenl... (show quote)

Ain't that always the way. The manufacturers have it figured out just how long the camera will work and they set the warranty accordingly. You are an accomplished photographer maybe it's some kind of sign to look for an upgrade.

Thank you! I have an APS-C SLR, Canon T3i with two lenses; it just hasn't gotten a lot of use in the past year :)

Oh Linda, so sorry to hear about your trouble with your beloved SX50. I do hope Canon look after you. Let us know please. Maybe we can all put some pressure on them for you.

I'll miss your Eagles! I wonder what Canon's design specs are for the SX50? I doubt if there are many copies that have that many exposures and were I a SX50 engineer, I would love to get yours to study; hope they trade you even up for a new model or better yet sign you up to test their products. You've got the credentials!

I have found that Canon is very cool about warranty stuff. I took my 7D in for a problem and without the receipt they fixed it. I took my 5D III in for repair and the counter person told me that if I could find my receipt and it was less than 14 months from the date of purchase, they'd honor the warranty. Of course, when I hunted down my receipt it was 19 months old. But still.....

Oh Linda,
You have my sympathy. I know how much you love that camera. Actually, your photos and recommendations greatly influenced me to purchase one when I "needed" a bridge camera.
I looked at the Canon forum I stumbled on a while ago to see if anything jumped out at me. The only thing I spotted was someone said their LCD was black. After a bit of back and forth, someone suggested that the poster might have inadvertently switched to EVF. You have probably already checked for this, but it's all I've got right now.
Ignore the previous 2 sentences. I just reread your post and that CANNOT be the problem. Sorry, I'm upset for you.
Please keep us posted on your progress or lack thereof.
Mikey

So sorry, Linda. Can you shoot with the view finder? Good luck!

Linda, call Canon and calmly explain the situation to them. May is not a long time to be off warranty and it's very likely they will still treat and honor this issue as a warranty repair.
Canon is generally very good about these types of things.

Several years ago I called because my waterproof D10 got water into it after a day at the beach. They said... it's not supposed to do that. I agreed and despite it being a month or two past warranty they immediately sent me a brand new one, didn't even bother with a repair attempt.
Good luck.
