U R right. I think it's because more and more people just want the best price (in this stagnant economy) and hope to figure it out on their own. The "mom & pops" of the world will fade like dinosaurs. So sad but so true...

I really have to get my hands on the camera before I buy.

Two things wrong there. First, "B" is getting harder and harder to find. Second, if you're an expert, likely that "A" won't have what you're looking for. Just sayin'!

Exactly!

The camera shops here in Columbus are more photo department stores than camera shops. I tend to do my research online & buy from B&H, Adorama, & Cameta. If I'm in a hurry, I have an Amazon.com prime account & can get most items in 2 days.

I live in Canada and have tried all those and all are great! Adorama's shipping prices are a bit higher than B&H, but that might not be the case when they ship to US destinations! I have bought used cameras and lenses from both Adorama and B&H; a few returns resulted when dealing with the former, but never with B&H!

If you're in Indiana, Jack's Camera Shop in Muncie is a good one.

But browsing and laying hands on the goodies to play before buying is so hard.

It would help to know where you are located; then perhaps someone could recommend a camera store in your area.

In Maryland, the only one left is Service Photo, in Baltimore. And their prices are not much different than what I see in B&H. The service? Can't be beaten! They are terrific.

If you let us know where you live there are probably more than a few members who could suggest one to you. Even though Costco, Best Buy, Sears, Walmart and other stores do sell cameras they are not camera stores.

There is a very good camera shop near me. A few months ago, I decided to add a 16-35 F/2.8 (Canon) to my kit. The store price was around $200 more than any online price, but I bought it from them anyway. They are really good, offer excellent service and advice, so I figured the extra $$$ was worth it. Better in the pocket of a real person than a cyber entity (in this case, anyway).

We here in Toronto Ontario are very lucky to have several large camera stores right in the city. Henry's Camera also sponsers a camera show called Exposure once a year and it features some great clinics and some amazing prices on everything that you would need for photography. I was like a kid in a candy store this past year...but so dangerous!! Another nice perk...Henry's Camera has classes for every type of camera and classes on photographic composition...
