Well I was successful in stirring the pot. Thanks for all the replys and comments. I never intended to limit the term hero to military personnel. It applies equally to fire figthters, law enforcementI, single parents who succeed in raising their children and others that perform their duty under stressful and threat of physical harm. I was and am pissed to hear the term used with respect to actors and sports figures. Idol or star I can live with.

I would add to that... For the benefit or well being of others while sacrificing his/her own personal safety.

Hmmm, was there no word "Hero" before war then, is this what you guys are saying?

A hero could be someone jumping into a body of water to save someone in trouble out there. They could be an excellent swimmer and just did what they did well, but to the person they saved that savior was their hero.

Or to a little girl, the dad who climbed the tree to bring down her little kitten who was stuck up there, or to the little boy, the fireman who went down the drain to retrieve his little puppy who got stuck there.

Hero is many things to many people and does not have to be limited to war times only.
Hmmm, was there no word "Hero" before wa... (show quote)

Oh Lucian, I adore you !! BY "defination" every mother is a hero.

I will, on the 15th our daughter is due. And after going through birthing class for 5 weeks and watching those videos, I can assure you that ALL mothers are heroes.

As a veteran of 20 years of Naval service I almost puke when I hear the word hero used for an actor or sports figure. When the defense is armed with automatic weapons then a quarterback might be a hero but probably not $23M a year is not enough to get shot at. Now this is just me bitching but what do other hogs think?

My definition of a hero is simple and has nothing to do with whether a person wears a uniform or not, and is not based on the person's choice of occupation. My definition of a hero is any individual that puts their own life in jeopardy in order to rescue or protect another individual or individuals whose life or lives are at risk. ;)

2 Dog Don,

On this topic I couldn't agree with you more! It makes me ill when I hear a center fielder that makes a "good" catch called a Hero... or any other actor or sports figure.

Sanity reigns! How many times have I heard John Wayne called a hero? Put the phrase John Wayne hero into Google and you will find thousands of hits.

While many of Hollywood's leading men put on the nation's uniform, Wayne spent the war storming the beaches at Malibu.

FYI, John Wayne tried to enlist but was told repeatedly he could do more for the war effort making movies both Hollywood and military training films. He did support the USO as well as the war bond tours. What can be heroic is to take a stand on an issue that isn't popular and sticking to it even at the risk of your career. For example, in today's Hollywood any actor who proclaims he/she is a conservative will get blacklisted by all the Hollywood lefties. Charlton Heston got away with it because he was Charlton Heston. I guarantee you that since Jon voight has spoken out against tax and spend Barry, he will not be able to find work.

That's not what author Garry Wills says in his biography of Wayne. You might remember Wills as the author of books like:
What Jesus Meant, What Paul Meant, Nixon Agonistes: The Crisis of the Self-Made Man and Why I Am a Catholic. This guy was never a flaming liberal.

So, are you calling Wayne a hero?

I reserve the term heroes for those who risk much to help others. Schindler was a hero, the Christian martyrs are heroes. mother Teresa was a hero, the cops and firefighters on 9/11 is a hero. John Wayne is an inspiration yes hero no. Jimmy Stewart on the other hand is both since he flew bombers in Europe during ww2. I do agree athletes, musicians, actors etc are not hero's.

I have one picture of a genuine hero, a U.S. Marine with 37 years active service, who fought on IWO JIMA and through the Korean and Vietnam wars. He still participates (in uniform, which still fits) in activities including providing a military presence for those otherwise forgotten by society.
He received the Purple Heart and other awards of course, but that doesn't qualify him for hero. He just is, by being there standing strong when we needed his service.

There are many heroes, and I've known a lot of them since I lived for 3 years among them in the Home of Heroes, i.e., the U.S. Naval Home at Gulfport, MS. 2002-2005

I will post U.S. Marine MGYSGT Ed Bardwell's picture on my topics as hero...I think the pic will prove better than a thousand words. Two things in the pic stand out; the Purple Heart and his grizzled old hands.

The word hero is overused nowadays, and most of those who are would rather not be.

Darn, I thought a Hero is a sandwhich, or is it a cocktail?

Some people say that military personnel are heroes. I agree, some were and are. I was with 1st Recon in Vietnam. I don't consider myself a hero. I did what was expected of me.

Some say that law enforcement or fire fighters are heroes. Fire fighters definitely fall in that category. Used to be law enforcement did too, but the new breed to law enforcement has lost some of that luster, IMO. Too many instances of shooting first and then finding out the kid had a toy gun or no gun. Trigger happy we used to call people like that.

To me, most of the real heroes are the man or woman that gets up every morning, goes to work every day and takes care of their family with no real thought of reward. They watch out for their neighbors and their fellow human being. They do things because it's the right thing to do.

Sports figures, movie stars, celebrities in general, are NOT heroes.

I gotta go with the majority on this one. Sports and media will never qualify as heros.
The last video I have of sixteen of my friends is them recieving Last Rights from Father Mychal as they ascend the steps of tower On on 9/11/2001.
To ALL who serve, no matter where or how, you have my undying admiration. You are all heros.
"The man who signs up for a dangerous job is already a hero. Everything else that happens is just part of the job." Paraphrased from Chief Coaker, The first Chief of the NYFD.
