As a veteran of 20 years of Naval service I almost puke when I hear the word hero used for an actor or sports figure. When the defense is armed with automatic weapons then a quarterback might be a hero but probably not $23M a year is not enough to get shot at. Now this is just me bitching but what do other hogs think?
2 Dog Don,
On this topic I couldn't agree with you more! It makes me ill when I hear a center fielder that makes a "good" catch called a Hero... or any other actor or sports figure.
totally with you guys on this one. There are currently several terms that are completely misused in todays society. God bless you and thanks for your service 2dogdon.
couldn't agree with you more...you are right on
The word hero is def. overused in todays society. To me a hero is someone who is scared to death and still performs his duties.

I think that's a very good definition and it helps to explain why there is such a strong comaraderie between fellow veterans in all branches of the service. Their pride comes from knowing that under those difficult circumstances, they still did their duty.
But there are a lot of quiet, unseen heros here at home, especially in today's circumstances, struggling to keep their lives and families together in what must seem like a world turnd upside down.
I am so glad someone besides me feels this way. After serving two tours in Viet Nam as an infantrymen and being awarded a Purple Heart among other awards. It makes me sick to see sports figures and others given such credit. Visit a VA Hospital and meet some real heros
Sports folks used to do what they did for the thrill of it and pleasing their fans.
Now ...... HA it's all money

Hmmm, was there no word "Hero" before war then, is this what you guys are saying?
A hero could be someone jumping into a body of water to save someone in trouble out there. They could be an excellent swimmer and just did what they did well, but to the person they saved that savior was their hero.
Or to a little girl, the dad who climbed the tree to bring down her little kitten who was stuck up there, or to the little boy, the fireman who went down the drain to retrieve his little puppy who got stuck there.
Hero is many things to many people and does not have to be limited to war times only.
Ok Lucian guess I'll be the first to throw back. Not one of these responses indicates that heroes don't come from other parts of society. But to say that derek jeter is a hero for making a diving game winning catch or that bruce Willis is one for "acting like one" is over use and misuse of the term. Any can be a hero, but the term needs to be attached to having done something heroic. As was stated being against all odds but persevering in the name of aquiring the desired positive end result. Futhermore, since war has been a part of mankind since the beginning of time then no there probably weren't heroes before war.
One of the definitions of the word "Hero" according to Dictionary.com is "the principal male character in a story, play, film, etc."
Is this a Hollywood thing?
Many of you Hoggers are ex-serviceman and I would think quite a few actually merit the description of "Hero"
In my book, a hero is someone who has committed a brave act, possibly putting him/her self at risk at the time. My definition is not limited to service personnel but anyone who demonstrates genuine bravery wheher it be physical or pshycological in order to help or save another.
A leading actor is not a hero unless he commits a brave act. Watching his stunt double abseil down a tall building is not a brave act. (Though wearing all that make up in the street might well be considered brave.)

I would add to that... For the benefit or well being of others while sacrificing his/her own personal safety.
