sounds like a bunch of bull to me, as well as the fact, that the shipment of these lenses, both in either cannon or nikon has been super slow, as so that would seem to me, that their are still on going problems with this lens...........

Regis, the problem is well documented and was the cause of Tamrons removing them from the market. The issue was limited to the 7D and 1D models when shooting in AI-Servo mode only. Other bodies had no issues, and neither did the 7D or 1D's when shooting in other modes. It was very specific, but Tamron is updating the firmware in all these lenses now if you return it to them.

Here are a couple of photos taken with the early version Tamron 150-600 and the Canon 7D and taken in Al Servo Mode.... Rich

No but I did take a series of about a dozen photos of a moving truck at the 600mm and in Al Servo mode and they came out very good. I would send them but I just wanted them as a test and after viewing them I was very satisfied and since they weren't of particular interested I deleted them. I did use the distance switch on the lens and I think a lot of people that had trouble in servo mode didn't use this switch are the ones that had trouble with the lens....Rich

I have issues with both the 7D and the 1D IV with the focusing and "freeze" at 450-600. I have one of the first lens that was shipped. I also have the Canon 600 f4 so it has nothing to do with not knowing how to use the lens for BIF. I do like the lens and use it at times when the prime is to heavy etc. I did speak with Tamron and when we sorted out that it is an issue I was asked to send it for their review. Due to travel it will be returned at a later date. I have seen the various posts and decided to provide my personal experience.

I contacted Tamron via email - I asked about the problems with the 150 - 600 lens, below is my question and below that Tamron's response ... I don't think they answered my question.

I use a Canon DSLR EOS 7D. I ordered a Tamron 150 – 600 mm lens several months ago … B&H has informed me the lens has finally arrived & they are shipping it. My question … there is rumor going around that this lens had some problems with it and that’s one of the reasons it was taking so long to deliver … is the lens that is being shipped me had all the updates & fixes that are known to date?? I was informed that there was some sort of problem specifically related to the Canon 7D. Thanks for any information you can provide.

Hello Tom,

Thank you for contacting Tamron. We have not seen any issues with the Canon 7D and this lens. Actually, we did our own testing here with the 7D and found that it worked properly. We also compared the lens with a Canon equivalent and didn't see any differences. It's true that some camera bodies track better than others but we didn't see issues with any bodies. Naturally, shooting birds at 600mm F6.3 is not an easy thing to do and I think some users may just not be used to shooting at this long focal length and F stop.

Some of our photographers have been shooting birds in flight with this lens so I think we may have some of these images posted on our web site soon.

If you have any questions please ask.

Kind regards,

Do you actually expect a company to admit they have a problem with a product? It would cause mass defections and expense.

Look at what happened with the D600. Nikon had to be forced to do a fix. Tamron is no better.

That statement sure does contradict Tamrons actions in pulling all of them off dealers shelves in February to correct the AF problems on 7D and 1D series bodies. And now they are asking everyone to return them to Tamron for a "firmware" update. Hmmmmm

MT,

I agree, it makes no sense. They pulled the lenses, returned them to the retailers, and am now telling me I should return the lens to them for a rom upgrade from 100 or 102 to 105. You would think the lenses the retailers now have in stock would be up to date but they are not, according to the Tamron representatives. It makes it very hard to trust Tamron at this point.

Rich,

First, nice shots. However they don't prove anything. You are in the right mode but shooting stationary, or near that, not a moving subject like BIF. The problem is when shooting a moving subject it will lose focus and can't seam to get it back.

I use a Canon 6D with my Tamron 150-600mm lens and I can tell you I haven't had any issues. I have taken hundreds of photos and the lens does great with birds in flight to detailed insect shots and you can see these on my posts here with UHH.
Your Canon 7D will work fine with this lens.

Regis,

I have seen your work and the photos look good, but as you state they are all taken with the 6D.

I own both the 6D and the 7D and do have problems with the 7D, none with 6D.

The problems are with a different camera than you own & use, not the 6D. How can you tell someone they will have no problems if you do not own the 7D, or any of the cameras that are reportedly having problems?

I just placed an order earlier this month. So I'm very inquisitive about your following statements.

What do you mean when you say the ones in stock are not up to date? How do you know?

What information do you have of what the Tamron reps have stated that the ones in stock are not up to date?

By just placing my order it would certainly give me great concern and I would like to know and have information upon these subjects.

Thank you,

That didn't happen to me when I shot pictures of a moving truck. I used Janyce's lens and she saw the photos. Out of 12+ there was only one a little out of focus and that might have been me moving the camera to fast to keep up with the truck. I'm not trying to convince any one I'm just saying I had no trouble as long as I set the lens switch in the proper position....Rich

I just got my lens a little over two weeks ago. The serial number is in the low 5000's. Sea dog's serial number is in the 6000's and a Tamron rep told him his rom chip is most likely a rom 100 or a rom 102. Tamron is now up to rom 105. The rep recommended that he send the lens back to them for an upgrade. Others are reporting the same thing. Rom 100 is what they started with so it is apparent that when the lenses were recalled they didn't do anything to them, just sent them back to the dealers. At least that is what it looks like. I am not going to spend 20 to 30 bucks to get an upgrade on a lens I just got, that makes no sense.

All the people I have talked with, who own Canon 7D's, didn't have any problems.
