I have been using the Nikon D7100 for about 8 months. Hardly never us flash anymore. Any thoughts ? Just a reguler guy shooting pics.

It's a whole other world of photography. You don't have to ever use flash, but to avoid it "on principle" seems odd. If you are willing to use lights inside when shooting, then you're already using artificial light, and flash is just another type of that.

Be careful and remember that you are "painting light" in photography. You can effectively use flashes outdoors as well as indoors to achieve good white balance and eliminate unwanted shadows. If you depend on higher ISO features that your D7100 allows you may be cheating yourself and the shots you are trying to create. Light bounces and comes from many sources. Your choices are critical to good photography. Good luck and may the"light be with you".

Like amehta said, it's a whole other world. If you learn to use it and I don't mean the little flash on the camera but an external flash, you can get some great shots with them.

If you need it and don't use it, that's an issue. Maybe you just shoot landscapes and it is not necessary because you are always on a tripod!!

Using natural light makes great photos.

Not necessarily - Plenty of lousy photos have been taken with natural light. GOOD light makes great photos, whether it is natural or man made.

A regular guy may wish to expand his photographic opportunities by introducing the use of flash lighting to his photography skills.

Check out this Web-site:

Good luck.

I got an external flash for the hotshoe on my D5200...I never used flash before. Now I consider it almost necessary to use fill flash on an out door portrait (and often as not indoors too) because the outdoor light usually leaves the face sort of in shadow, or over exposed in extremely bright sunlight with a squinting subject. Using flash is not easy, I think I had good reason to avoid it for so many years, but to be a complete photographer I think it is necessary to gain some experience and control of flash technique, despite it being a pain in the ass.

I think there's more complication to using flash than to using your camera. Take a look at this link. He has lots of good info on flash. YouTube will also provide info.

You can sign up with lynda.com for a week for free. They have excellent videos on flash - and everything else. It's only $25 for a month, with access to over 1,000 courses. I generally sign up for a month at a time.
