I have been using the Nikon D7100 for about 8 months. Hardly never us flash anymore. Any thoughts ? Just a reguler guy shooting pics.

Flash can make your images pop, eliminate shadows, remove the background, and more.

You are missing out on a creative and valuable tool.

It's like any other part of photography. It can be friend or foe. It is certainly a part of photography worth the time and effort to learn. Personally, like using manual settings on the camera much of the time, I prefer manual settings on the flash as well. I have found it to be a bit more consistent than TTL. Others may prefer the opposite. It is just works better for me.

Not necessarily - Plenty of lousy photos have been taken with natural light. GOOD light makes great photos, whether it is natural or man made.

Or a combination of both using the flash off camera to fill in the shadows.

Adam Jones has three great blog posts on to how use flash. After hearing him speak on this subject, I am rarely shooting without flash.

I don't know if you asking why your flash doesn't work very often or if you are telling us that you choose to not use flash any more since you are getting great images without it now. Please elaborate.

I use flash all the time whether on my Nikon cameras or Canon G-10. Just this past weekend I used the on camera flash of my G-10 to photograph my granddaughter riding her bicycle in bright daylight. Of course I don't know how old you are but you might remember your mom taking photos of you and having you look into the sun so your face would be brightly lit for the photo. Then you might remember squinting because you were looking into the sun. By using even the pop up flash on your camera you can take a photo of someone directly away from the sun (no squinting) but their face will be nicely lit by the flash. If someone is wearing a ball cap the on camera flash will put light under the bill so you can see their face.

By not using flash you are limiting yourself to only a few brightly lit areas of photography. Give it a try.

It's a whole other world of photography. You don't have to ever use flash, but to avoid it "on principle" seems odd. If you are willing to use lights inside when shooting, then you're already using artificial light, and flash is just another type of that.

Interesting. I often use flash even outdoors in natural light. I use it as a fill or sometimes as a hairlight. Of course, I don't mean the built in flash. For very little coin of the realm, I've purchased some Yongnuo flashes and triggers.

Ditto: "but to be a complete photographer I think it is necessary to gain some experience and control of flash technique."

I got an external flash for the hotshoe on my D5200...I never used flash before. Now I consider it almost necessary to use fill flash on an out door portrait (and often as not indoors too) because the outdoor light usually leaves the face sort of in shadow, or over exposed in extremely bright sunlight with a squinting subject. Using flash is not easy, I think I had good reason to avoid it for so many years, but to be a complete photographer I think it is necessary to gain some experience and control of flash technique, despite it being a pain in the ass.
