The teacher emphasizes raw because he feels that it is a better format for adjustments

Yes, I agree with that.

I downloaded a trial lightroom from the internet, and I can't open my nef on it. maybe I don't know what I am doing

Lightroom can definitely open nef files. Something else is going on.

Use the View NX that came with the camera.

He said it didn't come with the camera. He got the camera refurbished.

If so, you can teach an old dog new tricks.

While you can download and try it for free, Nikon Capture NX2 is definitely not free, it costs over $100.

have it check for updates - LR 5.x should definitely be able to open raw images from the D3200

NEF is Nikons version of a "Raw" image file. Raw files are the raw data produced by the image sensor. Usually the camera includes what it thinks the best settings would be along with this data like white balance and general image tweaks.

two different purposes - ViewNX is just what the name says - a viewer of images. Youj can edit movies but not images. CaptureNX is a sophisticated editor. However will open only Nikon's NEF (raw) files.

I know you said "usually", so I'm not specifically complaining about your comment...

I don't agree with the idea that "camera jpegs are the result of what the camera thinks is best, but edited raw is what the photographer thinks is best." If the photographer does nothing, the result is either what the camera defaults pick or what the editing software default preset picks. If the photographer knows enough to adjust things in the editing software, they can also adjust things in the camera settings.

I still say using raw is good (I think I helped convince MadMikeOne of that yesterday). But let's be honest about what the differences between camera jpgs and edited raw really are.

With ViewNX2, you can edit:
* exposure compensation
* white balance
* sharpness
* contrast
* brightness
* highlights
* shadows
* straightening
* red-eye
plus the Nikon "picture control" settings.

I couldn't agree more - I just figured that was beyond what they were asking :) I shoot in Raw mode almost all the time.

And it does a good job of it all. It's got a great NEF Raw converter that I think kicked out really nice images with the default tweaks.
