You can open them in Photoshop or Elements. You can also open them in lightroorm and I believe that there are several free photo editors that handle raw (nef) files.

The camera should have shipped with a ViewNX CD. That will open them.

You need to use a program which is newer than the camera. Each camera's raw files can be different, so each program needs to know about the camera before it can open the raw files.
Several free options, in a loose order of preference:
1. Nikon View NX2
2. FastStone Image Viewer
3. Use Instant JPEG From Raw to extract the embedded jpg
4. IrfanView
5. Use Adobe DNG Converter to convert the nef file to a dng which CS4 should be able to work with

The software on CD is available on the nikon web site. Free (since it opens only NEF they have no problem sharing it... :twisted: :mrgreen: :lol: )

Check the Adobe site, you might be able to download an update to Adobe Camera Raw for your camera. Otherwise, update your software to Lightroom and Photoshop CC(better) or go to the Nikon site and download Capture NX (not as good as LR), or use a free converter (only if you have to).
I believe that Adobe is still offering the Photoshop/LR combo at $9.99/month. If they are, jump on it.

ViewNX2 should have came with your camera - if not download it from Nikon's site

The latest version of the RAW converter in CS4 is too old to convert your NEF files. With the camera you should have a program that you can use to convert NEF files-NXVIEW.
