A lot of it is marketing. I am relatively new to the Hog. This topic is probably the most frequent topic. If one or the other was demonstribly better all the others would go out of business. There is a reason Nikon or Canon are the 2 leaders. One word Glass. Both have more choices than any other maker.

This is the age old battle, and can go on for days.. The answer is not the camera but the user. Both are great, it used to be Ford vs Chev.. I drive a Ford and use Nikon, some people prefer ?

Both have their particular uses. Nikon for making superb photographs, Canon for door stops.

Get the one that most people get, there must be something to it.
If you need more, I can be VERY specific!! ;-)

I have been researching both brands for longevity, picture colors, clarity, etc........... overall performance and value, there does not appear to be a "definitive" difference as to which brand is better from what I have found. There is a difference in pricing. One brand is "Made in China" while the other brand is "Made in Japan." So, which would anyone who reads this post would find as the better brand?

Olympus. You can also get adapters for your Olympus to use other off-brand lenses, such as Nikon or Canon.

How do you explain Canon bringing the lesser 5D3 onto the market $500 dearer than the superior D800?

Maybe it isn't ?
If it was cheaper maybe you would be thinking that canon cut corners. Theres definitely a school of thought here that you get what you pay for.
Clearly you must be getting a better quality camera than the cheap nikon :)

Me I choose what I can afford, and i'm loving what I have and its not Nikon or Canon.

Typically people end up with a substantial investment in lenses and upgrade bodies that are compatible with that glass. Everybody likes to have made the "right" choice. Which leads to an almost religious devotion to the brands we choose.

Truth is a top class photographer will get superb results from any good camera and if you don't know what you are doing your results will be dire at times regardless of how good the camera is.

Do not be swayed by persuasive adverting, there are several other makes to consider, Olympus, Sony, Pentax etc., some of these alternatives have excellent image quality often far better than Nikon/Canon.

Now there's a maturity in the those systems, which means they're better today than they ever were; but for a system, and for either Canon or Nikon, the fact that so many pros use them is beneficial for future innovations.
And along those lines, hats off to Olympus! VERY innovative! :D

I would lean towards the camera (or anything else) made in Japan over one made in China. Just my humble opinion.

To agree with this a silly, and dare I say, a STUPID, statement. It is as silly and stupid as it, itself, is.
That would go for if it was vs. Nikon, or Sony, or Pentax, or Olympus, etc.
All of these brands make cameras that I'm absolutely certain are better than 95% of those who slam the brand(s) they don't own. It's funny to read the comments; most who post couldn't take a decent picture with anything other than their fee own camera, which is comical and ludicrous.
:-D

He recognized STUPID, and chose to hold back.
Let me step forward and proclaim that there is a STUPID poster in the thread, and I commend SS for not swallowing him whole and spitting out his Nikon.

A slam is not ever cool, nor respected, so wizen up, birdseyeview and winterrose.
