I use a 1.4 extender with my 5d3 and 400mm 2.8 lens. Yes it goes to f4 but I always shoot wildlife at f8 or higher for the DEF.I retain auto focus.

The 2x extender works okay with that lens. It works best at manual focus on there 100-400. It auto focuses pretty nicely with the 70-200 2.8L, the 300 2.8L, the 500 f4L, The 600 f4L.
You can find a compatibility chart on line by just asking for a compatibility chart for the Canon 2XIII extender.

Does anyone know if the Canon 2X iii extender is compatible with the Canon 5d mark iii? I was thinking about picking one up as I thought I read somewhere that it was and that you did not loose auto focus with that camera. More to the point would be compatible with the Canon 100-400 5.6 and/or the Canon 400MM 5.6?

The 2X is not compatible with the 100-400 and have AF on ANY camera. - though the 5D III will AF with F8 effective aperture with the latest firmware. The 100-400 will AF with a Tamron or Kenko 1.4X on the 5D III.

Buy the Tamron 150mm-600mm Lens you will never regret it. I own a canon 100-400mm L and love it but my tam 150-600 has just as good image quality and is well built as well for a great price of 1069.00

The Canon 400 5.6 prime with Canon 1.4X is ultimately, a better solution for use on the 5D III - go here for a good video review ......http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1fmMG5jgDwk

It sure will work with above mentioned camera, in fact it is optimized for it and the 1DX's AF systems and works beautiful well, but if you use a 400mm/5.6 lens with the 2x, you will loose autofocus, no matter what camera you're using. The same lenses will autofocus, if you use the 1.4x with them! I have both, the 1.4x and the 2x III and they work well with my 5D MIII, but it does not autofocus with the 2x. With the 1.4x the AF speed is still about just as fast as without it!

Donkas1946, I just rented the 2x iii extender to try on my 100-400. I was thinking of buying it. At this point I will NOT be buying it. The AF will not work and I have to manual focus. The lens is heavy enough and it's hard to get a real sharp imagine with out adding more length to the lens. Also the FStop only goes to 11 instead of 5.6 without extender. We rented the extender from http://www.lensrentals.com/. We do want to try on my husband 70-200 which might work better because without the extender his lens goes down to 2.8.

Hi Cassy, a lot depends on what you are shooting. The 100-400 will work for BIF BUT not with a 2x, your right f/11 however if you are say photographing wolves, I prefer photographing to shooting, then a 2x can and will work but not in low light and yes manual focus too. What body are you using? A 1.4 would make your lens an f/8 and even that may be a problem. The 2x works very well on the 70-200 f/2.8 but you may have to micro adjust if your image isn't as sharp as you want and again if your body can be micro adjusted. Photography is an ever learning adventure, have fun!

If you have the latest firmware installed on the 5D Mark iii (version 1.2.1), you can get autofocus up to f\8. So, to use the 2X extender on a lens and still get autofocus, you must have a lens with a native f\4 capability. Since your lens is a f\5.6, only the 1.4X extender will retain the autofocus capability (1.4X loses one stop which will make a f\5.6 an f\8 with the 1.4X extender attached).
On a side note, you must install the extender on the lens prior to installing it on the camera (not install the extender on the camera then attach the lens) in order for the camera and the lens to properly communicate.
I have the 5D Mark iii and the 500mm f\4; the 2X extender used with this combination still provides good autofocus capability as an f\8 combination.

lol I don't worry about the stops so much as the auto focus. Eyes aren't what they use to be

But the stops are DIRECTLY related to the autofocus. The 1.4x TC loses 1 stop and the 2x TC loses 2 stops of light. So if the camera retains autofocus to F8, then the autofocus will only work with a 1.4x TC and a lens that has a max aperture of F/5.6, and a 2x TC will only work with a lens that has a max aperture of F/4.

I have to 2Xii hindsight now tells me that since I have used it with the 100-400 and got decent results, of course in well lighted scenes.
I have also used it with the 70-200 2.8 lens, and said to myself, duh what is point when you are loosing 2 Fstops.
In the future I will consider the EX 1.4 so the loss of f/stops in low light situations will not be as critical
