Does anyone know if the Canon 2X iii extender is compatible with the Canon 5d mark iii? I was thinking about picking one up as I thought I read somewhere that it was and that you did not loose auto focus with that camera. More to the point would be compatible with the Canon 100-400 5.6 and/or the Canon 400MM 5.6?

Yes it is...to all of your above questions. And you can read all about it and all canon equipment at www.usa.canon.com. plus they have lots of articles on how to use their stuff. :-)

Sorry about the double post!!

Frustrating isn't it, I'm going through the same thing now. I also have the 5Diii, and need more umph to my 100-400 L. So I went onto the Canon technical support and they said it did work together but I would loose stops (which I knew) and focus. Yet I'll look somewhere else and it says the focus works in bright light, then others it works but slower. Wish I could get one answer lol

I had/have this combo and the 1.4x will work but the autofocus is extremely slow and not as accurate as without. The 2x will not auto-focus. The reason I said had/have is because I sold my 100-400 a couple of months ago right after I purchased both the new 1.4x and 2x mark III teleconverteres. I tried them both on the 100-400. I did not have a 400mm f/5.6

the 70-200 2.8 auto focus works in good conditions with the 5Diii and 2x but in dim light you have to manually focus. I would assume the same is with other lens. If you want the entire list of compatible lens, just check the canon product page of website.

Donkas1946, I just rented the 2x iii extender to try on my 100-400. I was thinking of buying it. At this point I will NOT be buying it. The AF will not work and I have to manual focus. The lens is heavy enough and it's hard to get a real sharp imagine with out adding more length to the lens. Also the FStop only goes to 11 instead of 5.6 without extender. We rented the extender from http://www.lensrentals.com/. We do want to try on my husband 70-200 which might work better because without the extender his lens goes down to 2.8.

The 5D MKIII will autofocus with a single central point with lenses or lens and teleconverter combinations that have an maximum aperture of F8 provided you have the latest version of the firmware installed. The 2X converter will work with the 5D MKIII body, but if used with an F5.6 lens will result in a combination with a maximum aperture of F11, so autofocus will not work. The 1.4X converter would give F8 with the F5.6 lens, and so would retain autofocus.

I would rent it first. We did! I will NOT buy the 2x for my 100-400.

Uh....just to be clear.....you will ALWAYS 'lose' 1 stop for a 1.4 converter and 2 stops for a 2X converter....doesn't matter what lens combo.

lol I don't worry about the stops so much as the auto focus. Eyes aren't what they use to be

The More Stops you lose the More Light you NEED.

I know that but that has nothing to do with the auto focus needed for my eyes lol

I was going to suggest the same...to rent the extender....if think one can rent it for 4 days at a cost of $25 (plus sipping). Better than spending the $500

I use the Sigma 150-500 on my 5DMiii with out worry of the issues that come with the extender

Like folks have said many time. "There is no free lunch"

DonKas1946,

Here is information on the Canon 2X TC. I think I remember reading that it will only work in AF using the center cross focus point. Someone that owns this camera may be able to say for sure.

Canons TC's (extenders) are very dedicated and only work well on certain cameras and lenses. For this reason I often use third party TC's, Tamron's, on my Canon lenses.
