They are a terrific technology, very affordable. I think they can be an incredible tool for a photographer. I think people and the government should be more worried about people who still use their cellphones while driving. There's crashes in NJ every day because of that. Never herd of a flying quad crash hurting anyone. If it had, you can bet it would have been on every news station in the country. Look here to see what a photographer could do:

You can even use wireless video goggles with them and experience the flight as if you were flying. Imagine watching this through your goggles:

Do you remember making your own kites out of newspaper?

I have seen some very cool drone video that was not an invasion of privacy. I would love to play with one as a person who loves to photograph things...especially things that are hard to reach. However, logic should tell us that they are dangerous to low flying aircraft and most certainly an invasion of privacy if they are flying around your house.
As far as the tornado goes...my opinion is that if there were fatalities from the disaster, would you want your loved one's pictures spread all over the internet? I sure would NOT.
I agree that if I see one hover over my backyard for very long it might get shot down.

Why create a new agency? We have enough government BS. If someone thinks the FAA is broken, then let's get it fixed.

Jerry started an very interesting thread, I just don't think that this is a Freedom of the Press issue, any more than had this been a small aircraft flying over the area. Both flying devices; plane or drone, need to be controlled in the same manner.

^^^For the SAME reasons.

It ss not about freedom of the press but flying something over a disaster area, at the risk of creating more mayhem. As to the 'drone industry' can you spell invasion of privacy first?

Once again you jump the gun and shoot your keyboard off, in the wrong forum too.

Freedom of the press. Fly one of those things over my house and I show you freedom of the press.

I think is more a question of air space safety that a question of freedom of the press. As noted by other responders, I see a lot of these drones flying around very recklessly loaded with camera and stuff. A lot of these operators seem to have not respect for the safety of people and property on the ground. The FAA needs to tighten up the regulations on this aircraft type and start getting people trained and licensed. And fine the violators. Do we really want "Drone" paparazzi ? I don't particularity want some yahoo crashing into my house or injuring someone ground. Or even worst colliding with another aircraft and causing a air disaster.

A drone operator who got footage of tornado damage in Arkansas might be fined $10,000 by the FAA. Several operators could also be fined if the FAA decides to go ahead with this. Freedom of the press comes into play here, and the laws are vague. News like this is going to hurt the drone industry.

Hi Jerry...you said it. Idiots...and this country is full of them. I live next to some. They use all sorts of explosives to terrorize my animals (and me), and the fire dept. does nothing. Or claim they can't. LoL! It just goes on and on, without end. American's are so bored they'll turn to anything to amuse themselves. IMHO, drones are a disgusting tool to further steal our liberties...all this kind of thing is misused and abused. Power corrupts. We who value peace and quiet are doomed. Anyway, yes, good debate. :O)

Good for you. But I'm sure they'll have laws in place to protect the d------d things. Disgusting state of affairs. Here's to outlawing the use of them over America. Lol! :)

"PARK TAKES STAND AGAINST DRONES"

Yosemite National Park issued a warning Friday, and it didn't have to do with bears or hazardous conditions. The concern: drones.

There are numerous videos on YouTube in which unmanned aircraft are used to take in the scenic beauty.

Rangers said enough is enough. "Drones have been witnessed filming climbers ascending climbing routes, filming views above treetops, and filming aerial footage of the park" officials said in a statement.

The park said drones pose a safety threat and ruin the natural aesthetics. "Drones can be extremely noisy, and can impact the natural soundscape, " officials said. "Drones can also impact the wilderness experience for other visitors."

The park said the use of drones there is illegal, but it's unclear whether anyone as been caught in the act."

Long story there. This is, afterall...INDIANA. Where they make AND break their own rules and brag about it to boot. No joke.
