There are times when "Open With" in Lightroom is useful. If I download a single image from say, the Hog, I can "Open With" Lightroom, and the image immediately enters the Import screen, from then on the usual procedures apply.

It saves a lot of time for a single image.

I dont' think it does.

You still have to go through the identical import dialog box and now you've just added a "right click-choose open with" step to it.

It's no faster or shorter at all.

"Open with" will open LR, change it to the import dialogue and bring the image in

The long way round is
Open Lightroom
Open the Import Dialogue
Search and open the folder
Select the image

I only use this on single images, for two or more it is obviously more efficient to use the "Long way round".

Another way I import is to use the Watched Folders system in Lightroom and bring images in automatically, but Lightroom has to be opened first.

Thanks for that info Searcher. Now in Win 8.1 , I have my LR4 in the open with drop down window if I want to go there. Neat as it opened the folder the photo was included in and it was already checked to import, but, I could of selected other photos in the folder also if need be. Very fast!!!!!!!

I have a watched folder in a shared dropboxfolder for this precise reason - I rarely look at a single image from a student. When I need to look at just one image, it is just as easy to use ACR.

I just drag the image to the Lightroom icon. It opens the import dialog directly.

Searcher nailed it.

Now if you don't want Light Room as you default photo browser and don't want to clutter your desktop with a lot of shortcut icons, "Right" click on the program file or short cut icon on the desk top. The select "Pin to Start Menu" from the drop down menu. This will place a shortcut in the Start Menu that comes up when you left click the "Start" button. You can next "Right" click back on the desktop icon and Select "Delete" to remove the short from your desktop. I prefer my program icons be located on the Start Menu or the Tool Bar (at the bottom) and I try to leave my desktop uncluttered.

In Win 7 (and probably others) you will have to set LR as the default program to open the images:

Right Click on the image
Choose "Open With" on the drop down
Choose "Choose default Program" on the new drop down
Choose "Browse" in the dialogue
Select "Adobe" in the Explorer dialogue - Program Files"
Double click on "Adobe Photoshop Lightroom v5
Double click "Lightroom Application"
In the new dialogue click OK

Lightroom will now appear in the "Open with" list
In Win 7 (and probably others) you will have to se... (show quote)

It saves a lot of time for a single image. Since most of the assistance I give is centred on Lightroom, I would not usually want to edit in anything else.

I do this with Picasa and PSE 12
