I doubt that its the smallest nor lightest, but the Hero Pro series are small and light and produce reasonable pics.

I keep an old Kodak C663, 6.1 MP with a viewfinder, in my "man purse" nearby at all times. Takes very nice shots and, though I bought it new way back when, can be found for around $35 on Amazon or EBay.

thanks. I thought Hero was essentially a video camera. my Panasonic takes video which I almost never do.

this maybe changing the subject, but what is the smallest, lightest camera with an optical viewfinder? digital, of course

Canon sl1 is probably high on the list. My old Olympus e620 was smaller, I think.

I have had 4 Kodak digitals. all 4 broke down, 3 to the point of DNR. I handle my cameras gently. they all took excellent pictures when they worked

Got two that are over 8 years old, working great. With Kodak, older is better. On the other hand had two Canon point and shoots lose their VF zoom mechanisms. And I am a Canon DSLR shooter.

Where exactly do you park your truck?? ;)
Unfortunately in an open parking lot. Can easily get over 150F on a summer day.

You want a small camera that takes good quality photos, right? Do you have a cell phone? Some have very good cameras, rivaling the point and shoot cameras.
iPhone 5 and it wil take good pictures, if I do my part. Problem is I sometimes like to make large prints and they just don't hold up all the time, and no, I'm not a pixel peeper.

Another option is a u-4/3 camera. Much smaller and lighter than Nikon FX or DX and good lenses are available. Or a SuperZoom camera. All will take good photos at a fraction of the mass/volume of the DSLR.
It's a route I'd be willing to take, if I had the available funds.

I too carry a camera. It's a real hassle carrying a DSLR but now and then you get a shot that makes it worthwhile. You also learn a lot about your lens.

I have a great bag and I keep it on the floorboard out of the sun. I crack the window a little (rear window on a Tundra) and my windows are tinted heavily. Sometimes I add a blanket over the bag just for extra protection. It may get to 90 degrees at the most.
Guess I'll give it a try that way. Have several great bags and I do crack the rear window on my Sport Trac unless it's gonna rain. My worrying about excessive temps is just one of the curses of the engineer :) Which means, I'll probably, obsessively, run a couple tests with different bags and a dial thermometer :)

Thanks for the input and suggestions.

There are hundreds of good P&S cameras you can carry in your pocket, or in a little case on my belt. Getting a good image is better than missing a great image.
Logic that cannot be refuted. Thanks.

Since you are a Nikon guy, I carry a NIkon Coolpix P7100. Its a point and shoot that can shoot in RAW. 12MP I think, but it also allows me to control aperture and shutter manually. Its a few years old now, so they probably have a newer model.

I also have a D800, and aD7000 as a backup camera, but sometimes just don't feel like taking them on short outings. The P7100 works in those situations. I would never carry it into a low light place however.

I love my Coolpix P7100. Although it won't fit in a shirt pocket, I found a pouch so I can wear it on my belt. I think it's fine for low light, just not damn near slap dark as my D5100 is. :)
