When I upgraded to my D7000 I was intrigued about the possibilities afforded by two memory card slots. I had intended to capture NEF images in slot 1 and JPEG Fine images in the slot 2. My intention was to download NEF and JPEG cards in separate files on my computer. Given that many (maybe most) of my shots are not keepers I would delete many NEF images and just keep those I wanted to work on in LightRoom (just starting that too). I would keep more, but not all, of the JPEG images to distribute to unsuspecting friends and relatives and just enjoy as they were. When I googled setup instructions confusion reigned about the use and purpose of the two card slots. Several sites that I saw discouraged the use of the second slot for anything but overflow. Other people didn't seem to have any idea what they were talking about. (My wife frequently says that about me.) My question to friends here: is my thinking off? Do I misunderstand the purpose of saving in the two different formats? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have a D800. I use the SD slot for primary and the CF slot for secondary. I have a much bigger and faster DS card that CF. I then use my CF card as overflow. I used to shoot NEF and JPG. I was finding that except for occasional viewing I was not looking at the JPS and could quicly generate JPGs from the NEF. Which I do after a shoot anyway during editing. I need as much space for my pictures as posible. So I have eliminated the JPG capture as I was finding I did not need them any more.

It's nice having choices. When I'm shooting something important, I use the second card as a backup. I also like to shoot JPEG and NEF, so I might use a card for each, or both on the same card. Next time, I'm going to look for a camera with four SD slots. :D

My 2nd card is for overflow... I may rethink that strategy, though.

I agree. If you shoot raw and JPEG on same card you need to move files to computer and sort by application in your finder or equivalent. After sorting you can import to LR. I typically use second card for raw backup. However I am off to Cuba next week without a computer. In order to see my shots each might on my iPad mini (traveling light) I am considering shooting JPEG on the SD card. I have a very small adapter that plugs directly in to the iPad. To read the flash card I will need to connect the camera to the iPad, so I will put the raw files on the FC.

Alternatively, I shoot raw and raw backup on the two cards but then can only review them when I get home.

Never shoot Raw+JPEG...Raw only & make JPEGS as needed in Lightroom... Never had the occasion to fill the 32 GB SD cards I use on my D7100.... 2nd slot for backup (or overflow if needed)

Overflow / Backup / Raw ... I Use second card as backup. The second card was added primarily for Movie mode where a lot of memory would be needed. Look at your owner's manual for info about the two slots.

My set up is card 1 for raw , card 2 is overflow. If I was shooting for someone else I'd use card 2 for back up.

In case some of you don't know:

For those of you who want to use Raw and Jpeg and use the overflow card function. After you download your images to your PC the Jpeg and the Raw files will be all in the same folder 'right click' in that folder select new 'folder' name it either Jpeg or Raw. Second 'right click' inside the images folder again and select 'sort' on the secondary menu select 'type' the images will separate in to their respective file types. Then just select all the images you want to move to the folder you created earlier, and drag them all in there at once.

I have a d7100 and routinely use slot #1 for Raw and Slot #2 for JPEG for the reasons you stated. Sometimes when I'm shooting for someone I put one of their cards in a slot so as to make them a copy as I go.

I use RAW in one slot and JPG fine in the 2nd in my D7100. I travel a lot and selectively down load jpg files to an iPad to email to friends as I go. I have several cards and save the RAW files for PP when I get home. I'm not a professional photographer and I don't have clients so I only have myself to please. If I was going to photograph an important event for someone I'd probably switch the second slot to RAW to make sure I had a back up.

On a big trip I have cards for each day. I shoot nef and jpeg fine. I download the NEF files to my Lightroom cat along its on a 2 TB external drive. I then take both cards from that day and store them. Putting fresh cards in my camera for the next day.

I have only downloaded the JPEG's a few times in the past few years. But I have them as a backup in case something happens. I set my picture control to process my JPEGS so they are not to flat out of the camera.

Hope that helps By the way I use 32 gb transcend cards they have never failed me the only SD card I ever had fail me was a San disk ultra card.

With two cards in My D7100 and D800 I tend to shoot RAW with the second card as overflow. I discovered that I never download Jpegs. I format both cards after downloading to my computer.I like the two card system because it gives me options to please myself.

Since I MUST have photos to send to my editors after every shoot, I use the second slot as backup. If I run short of space, or forget to format the cards after the last shoot, all I do is pop out one card, put it in my pocket and format the other and keep shooting. Just a suggestion for those similarly situated.

There is no reason to ever run into overflow problems. It only takes a few seconds to exchange cards.
Backup is essential. Speaking from experience, corrupt cards really do happen albeit rarely. Murphy's law applies - the corrupt card will occur only at critical times.
