GAS is a terrible thing to waste. :P

Lukan, I have never even held a 1dx. But I'll tell you this, if it did not fit in my hands, I would break them and reshape them!! :lol:
Seriously, Photogs(pros) don't get them because they are high mp, and the lower mp is what allows it to shoot super fast.
The IDX has a processor dedicated just to the focus system, which is why it is superior. It has more cross-point focus points(41), than most cameras have points. A word of warning, those points are optimized to work best with the fastest lenses.
I see one of your interest is sports, but do you shoot them as well? If so, I can see why you are salivating. Your hit rate is going to skyrocket. The faster the sport, the better.
It will also open the door to use the super-fast f1.2 lenses. As well as the super lightweight super tele mkll lenses. Those teles are absolutely the lightest teles in the industry, by a long shot. The lenses make for some formidable combinations of man and machine!
Not to mention the programmable, 3 custom settings on the top dial. You program in your most used shooting settings, and in two seconds you can go from shooting fast outdoor sports, to low light action indoors, without even bringing up a mode.
With a super tele, you can shoot that camera directly in the pouring rain too.
Sometimes, a mans just gotta do, what a mans gotta do! Go for it.
And if your a little Canon rusty, just take a trip from the Windy City, to the City by the Bay, I'd be glad to help you get up to speed!!
That alone, would be worth your getting it!! :lol:
And to think, I did it all, without even using the "N" word.

One big caveat: there would be a very real danger of you becoming a FANBOY! :lol:

The resolution difference is irrelevant:
* 1DX: 18.1
* 5D Mark III: 22.3, 11% more linear resolution
* 6D: 20.2, 6% more linear resolution

11% means a 20x30 print becomes a 22x33 print. Will you ever notice that difference?

Along the same lines, there is no reason to get a 6D also. The 1DX is the only DSLR you need. There, saved almost $2k. :-)

What about a backup? (or second body for all the lenses)

If shooting professinally, or on "assignment", a back-up makes sense. For hacks like lukan and me, one spectacular camera will do. And for all the lenses, it's not that hard to switch them. :-)

Damn you, Sharpie, I knew you could do it! I actually am amazed that that machine has 2 Digic5+ processors for pictures and one Digic 4 just to manage the exposure. I love sports and I love shooting sports, and I've had enough missed shots, muffed moments to make the Pope swear! I love things that go fast, move fast, happen fast: everything from hockey to soccer (my godson played for the Galaxy until a month ago, got traded to Oslo!), to F-1 racing, volleyball, football and Tae Kwon Do. I also like landscapes and sunsets and vineyards.
I was out your way last June (Napa) and again last September (Napa, Carmel and Big Sur). Driving down Hwy 1 from Bodega Bay to Carmel is a TRIP! Can't enjoy the view because of the roadway twisting and turning. Beautiful country, awesome scenery and it's all in your backyard... lucky!
I'm getting this badass machine and the next time we're (wife and I) are in the Bay area, I'll let you know and we'll get together. By then I'm sure you'll have your own 1DX, but if not, I'll let you shoot mine. ;) :thumbup:

My pal only had ONE 1DX, not two. If he had two, then maybe...

I'll switch lenses... don't need a backup unless it's another 1DX. I can't even think that without literally laughing out loud! :lol: :lol:
That Sharpie wants to turn me into a FANBOY... I told you he's going to claim me on Team Canon when I'm actually neutral. I love great gear, regardless the manufacturer... I'm into the art, but man, do I ever have GAS!

I'm pretty certain that I read a survey somewhere that 80% of the world's photographers have GAS and that the other 20% lie about it!!

Most of the D800 shots suit the D800 better than the D4. I don't think the D4/D4s is unequivocally better than the D800, because of the resolution difference. I'm not sure if the same applies to the 1DX/5D Mark III pair.

I'll take a completely different approach to the question now. Recently someone posted the challenge to add up how much we spent on our gear. Now, stuff doesn't really matter, but experiences and memories do, so the real question is how much did we spend on the entire hobby (pros have a completely different calculation), including the photo trips, workshops, etc. But then it needs to be compared to our income over the same time, and the real question becomes, "Did we spend enough for an activity which gives us great pleasure?" Yes, that is how good I can be at rationalizing. :-D

The main thing is to try and keep the percentage of total income spent on camera gear below 100%

I am 100% freely admitting to the fact that I am a GAS-aholic. It is one of the reasons why I work. I am a lover of the finer things, and am also very financially responsible. I let out my GAS only occasionally, but when I do, those who I choose to include, know it! They too are GAS-aholics, and we respect that about one another. This forum, and this thread especially, has made matters only worse for me, but has also given me the ability to rationalize my Gear Acquisition Syndrome. Fellow GAS-mates SS, amehta, LFingar, avman (to name a few), have walked the path with me, and made this journey more bearable. I owe you my thanks for helping me alleviate my GAS, and enjoy life more thoroughly. Thank you. :-D

I'm shooting with the 1DX and it's better than I thought it would be. What a machine.
