It's learning new things that keeps the brain elastic and the mind young. Embrace it and enjoy.

Amazon has many photography books that are relative inexpensive. Scott Kelby has some too that will tell you "if you want to take this kind of pic, do this" which is kind of helpful instead of being left to figure out what setting to use and he has pics of Canon and Nikon (alphabetical order folks) so you can see.

I like what you said about shooting on Auto, then practicing with each individual step; that is exactly what I am doing now. As my mom would have said "slow and easy like a freight train".

:-) thanks for the vote of confidence. I stand by the statement. I am no pro by any means and will probably never be one but I am a lot better after time on here with everyones help but the question had to be mine before the answer mattered or registered with me. That requires taking photos and being unhappy with the result before you can start asking why or trying to repair it.

Photography is a wonderful hobby that will take you well into the future. Your dollars are well spent. Yes, there is a learning curve, but the camera can also be put on auto if you feel overwhelmed by settings and variables. On auto, you can still learn about composition, rule of thirds, etc. You have many hours and hours ahead of you of enjoyment, learning, exploration, and satisfaction....and yes, a bit of frustration. But seriously, what is worth doing that doesn't have some frustration? Have fun!

Hi NealB, I to went through a similar experience, first SLR, a Canon 5D 111 with the lens (latest 150mm 600mm tamon). You have come to the right place for learning so welcome. It begs the question, how did you find out about UUH? I can't remember and I am only 57.( I might post this as a Q ).

Good Luck

No it was just more dollars that than plan A was. Once I put the D7100 in my hand the size and weight just felt right compared to the 3 others I was considering at the store. Everything I bought is items I needed to get started because I had nothing to begin with. The good thing is I paid for all of it with cash I had received from selling some items I no longer needed and the cost was not put on a credit card. I do not regret making the purchase, it just is going to be a bigger learning curve then I was anticipating originally. I do not have any concerns as far as the software side of the hobby goes it is just a whole new set of terms, knowing when to adjust what, and how to achieve the results I expect. I always hold my self to extremely high standards no matter what I do.

Please allow me to place this scenario in perspective. Money spent on fancy dinners and fine wines......short term pleasure, no lasting benefit. Money spent on fancy cars and fast women........high depreciation, high maintenance costs and constant upkeep. Money spent on photo gear....the thrill of acquisition, the pleasure of self challenge, personal skill improvement, kinship of ugly Hedgehogs, and the knowledge that baseball season is here and new challenges abound. Welcome to the UHH darkroom. Please get the lights, the show is about to start.

Hi Neal,

I just bought a Nikon a couple of months ago, along with a great lens. I had been shooting with a SLR but only on auto mode, big mistake. I bit the bullet and am learning how to shoot in the different modes the new camera offers. It's not difficult. Just keep at it and don't be afraid to ask questions. The people here on UHH are a wonderful group of people.

Welcome to a wonderful, although somewhat expensive, addiction. My only advice is to stay clear of the temptation to set it on full auto and leave it there. Pick a function and get comfortable using it before moving to the next and over the next year you will probably be comfortable with every function and wonder why they even put "auto" on the camera. Congratulations on your "leap of faith".
