Figure on 5 grand for a body then you can spend your kids inheritance on lenses and other accessories.

How much you got? :D
Actually, I suggest you do it the other way around. Figure out a budget you are comfortable with and then start looking at what falls within that budget. You can also get some good used equipment at all the major retailers and right here on the Hog. In case you want to go that route I know for a fact that there is an excellent T3i, 2 lenses, and other items for sale on here. (I'm the one selling them). Can't go wrong!

I agree. Figure how much you can afford.
Then determine what your subjects will be. The rest will be easy.
Simple, buy as much camera has the budget allows!
Lfingar is right you can't go wrong with a T3i and a gently used one from a fellow forum member would be a great place to start. I've had one for a couple years and love it. I have not heard anyone mention B&H, in NYC, so I will. I've had great luck with them.

My first DSLR was the D7000 and it was a fantastic camera. Tell me, how much are you willing to spend? I you're willing to spend $2000, I'd recommend the D7100 and the Nikon 28-300mm lens.
If the D7100 is too much, I'd recommend a refurbished D7000.
I think it is $800. I would get the costco D3200 or D5100 kit with two lenses

I am looking to upgrade from a point and shoot Canon PowerShot SD1100 IS to DSLR. How much should I budget for a good camera with a couple of interchangeable lenses, camera case, and tripod?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
I have a Pentax KR virtually new with 4 lenses plus extras for sale for 1200.00 it is listed in the for sale section of Hedgehog. this is a great camera.
Go to Cameta Camera to see bundle prices. They have all the major brands and their bundles include camera, lenses, fliters memory cards, flash, tripod and case. I've gotten 2 systems from them (D5000 and D7000) and was able to actually call up and specify what I wanted so they made the bundle for me.
You can also ask if they will do a refurb bundle and save a few bucks more. The bodies are guaranteed for 1 yr and you can also get an extended warranty (think they use Mack Photo) for more time.

You're talking used, on ebay, right? :D
Buy the best refurbished Canon camera, then go for L lenses.

There are at least hundreds of answers to your question and you're the only one who can make those decisions. Go forth and do so. Read about the features, decided on what quality you expect in return, what is required to get 'er done, and shop, baby, shop! Google should be your constant companion. Come back here with your questions if or when total confusion sets in but only after you've read your manual a few times with the camera in your hands.

The lens should be comparable to the quality of the camera, so a D3200 set should not cost more than $1000, and likely a bit less, for example.
What does this mean? I can assure you that quality glass on an entry level camera is a major step up in image quality...
Like any hobby you can spend any amount of money on it. But like any hobby, you can buy a very good tool for a reasonable amount of money. I have a friend who is an Olympic trap shooter and he has a $20,000 Italian over/under shot gun. A $500 winchester pump in a masters hand could probably shoot 95% of the clay pigeons. I've been a photo hobbiest for 50 years and shot with a lot of gear. All the major manufacturers make great products. Go and see what feels good in your hands. If you like Canon the T3i is a great camera that B&H sells with a 2 lens kit (18-55, 75-300) for $599. Nikon sells the B3200 24MP kit with 2 lenses $596.95 (that's with a $250 rebate). The Nikon kit also comes with a case. I have a 16 X 20 print of the Lincoln Memorial that is laser sharp that I took with an old Nikon D70 6MP. Buy a good tool and work on your photographic skill. Your equipment won't let you down! You can get a good Manfretto tripod for around $125.
Both good references. I was extremely disappointed that Kai chose to do this one without his usual lovely assistants though. :-D

Think of an unreasonably high number and then double it.
