I am looking to upgrade from a point and shoot Canon PowerShot SD1100 IS to DSLR. How much should I budget for a good camera with a couple of interchangeable lenses, camera case, and tripod?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

How much does that cost. Does it include a camera case and tripod? How many lenses?

$2500 for nikon 5100, $3000 for nikon D3200, $3500 for a nikon D7100 or $6500 for a nikon D800 minimum.

I got the T3 bundle with a single 18-55mm zoom lens, A tripod (not very sturdy) and a couple of other accessories for about $385. Your mileage may vary depending on where you purchase it. Bundle can vary a lot. Check Amazon, eBay, and even with Canon. I love my T3 and it's a great step up from P&S especially if you are on a budget. Welcome to the Hog!

Any amount from $600.00 to $6,000.00. It depends on just how much camera you want.

Based on your lack of information start at 3,000 and work your way up or down.
Really you haven't given a brand of camera, what kind of lens for what purpose, what kind of photography, what kind and size of camera bag not to mention a good quality tripod for your needs and that will support camera and lens of your choice .

I just got the Nikon D5300 with the 18-140 lens. That was 1099. Than I bought a bigger telephoto lens 55-300 refurb. For 250. And than I spent another 250. On accessories total 1600. Plus tax

Agree. You can also find the Nikon D3100 kit at reasonable prices.

If you have a Costco or Sams membership, they often come bundled with 2 lenses and a case plus an extra 1-2 years warranty and you can return them, no questions asked if one does not work out for you.
Price will depend on where you buy and what is bundled with it. But these are great entry level dslrs and are reasonably priced. Just be sure to shop around.

I paid $599 for my D5100 with 18-55mm lens almost exactly one year ago. Not sure where you shop, but I would not pay $ 2500 for an entry level dslr. Costco has the Nikon D7100 bundle for $1749.00 right now on their web site. Their prices are usually the same in their store. Sometimes cheaper.

If you are willing to look at something other than Canon or Nikon, you can get a very nice outfit for under $1000.

All Sony Alpha (except the new 7 or 7A) accept Minolta lenses. Minolta made some very good glass and those lenses are readily available at reasonable prices used on eBay, B&H, Adorama, etc. I paid $500 for my Sony A65, another $300 for a nice Tamron 17-50 f2.8 (new), I bought a 50 f1.7 off eBay for $75 (looks and works like new). I also bought a 28-90mm Sigma on eBay for under $100. The A65 and big brother A77 both have great reviews and are loved by those lucky enough to own them. The A77 is a little higher than the A65, but you could still do a nice outfit for under $1200-1500.

I also have, but don't necessarily recommend, a Panasonic DMC-G5 m4/3 with 14-45 and 45-150 lenses that I bought brand new from Amazon for less than $800. The Panasonic does great landscapes, but isn't so great in low light, fast action, or close up. A friend has a G3 that he loves to take hiking, it's light easy to carry and does terrific at what he does, which is scenics and landscapes. I'm more into wildlife, birds and close ups so it's doesn't work for me.

A good bag will run you $40 to $400 or better, depending on what you want. I have Tamrac and LowePro and can recommend both. Both eBay and Amazon carry used as well as new.

I bought my tripod back in 1995 or thereabouts, it's a Slik U8000. It works fine for me, but again you can get a decent one for $100 or go into four figures.

Just a quick note...if you do go to eBay, watch the seller feedback - stick with established sellers (over 750-1000) who have good feedback - those are generally businesses who sell on eBay. They've been around awhile and aren't out to make a quick dime.

As someone has already pointed out I'd start by looking at Sams club and Costco for a good deal on a starter DSLR. They have great deals on both Canon and Nikon kits.

I'm not sure if this was meant to be humorous or not, but I think the numbers are way off. The lens should be comparable to the quality of the camera, so a D3200 set should not cost more than $1000, and likely a bit less, for example.

IMO, set your budget range first, then go to a brick and mortar camera store. Hold various cameras in your hand and ask questions, ending with, "what haven't I asked that I need to know to make this decision?"

Since you are on the west coast, if you are anywhere near San Francisco, I'd send you to Looking Glass Photo in Berkeley for their great staff. I've been to similar shops in Portland, Seattle and New York, and haven't received the same kind of care I've gotten at Looking Glass.

Check out which features could be important to you and which you can do without. Example - the Canon T3i is a good starter, but I personally prefer the T4i, but it doesn't have the wifi transfer of the T5i (which I'd love to have, but not worth upgrading from my T4i - purchased at Costco, BTW). You need to see what makes sense to you, dollar wise.

Remember to budget in for the essential tripod, UV Filters (essential to protecting your lenses), cleaning cloth/liquid, and other bits and bobs never mentioned.

Advice from UHH'ers is absolutely wonderful, but it can be a case of too many riches.

Edit - corrected

How much you got? :D
Actually, I suggest you do it the other way around. Figure out a budget you are comfortable with and then start looking at what falls within that budget. You can also get some good used equipment at all the major retailers and right here on the Hog. In case you want to go that route I know for a fact that there is an excellent T3i, 2 lenses, and other items for sale on here. (I'm the one selling them). Can't go wrong!
