We'll so much for the entry level DSLR. :-). I am a Canon guy, but that doesn't mean I can't appreciate another good camera. I didn't see what lenses you bought, so I can't comment on them. However, you bought an outstanding camera that you should be able to most anything you ever want to do camera wise. Congrats on the new toy and more importantly, Welcome to the Hog!

This purchase reminds me of when I bought my first PC (RadioShack Tandy TRS80) in 1967. It just looks so overwhelming at first glance.

Hey, I resemble those remarks. I am a Canon guy but you do have a great camera. I think the learning curve is worth it. I started out and when I got confused and frustrated at the overwhelming amount of information I just went out and shot. Still having fun. :-D

Someone on this forum said to read one chapter at a time then go out and practice. I have been following that advise and am making progress albeit slow. Main thing is to have fun and post pics so we can all see.

Oh yeah, a big WELCOME to the forum.

Hi, nice intro here. Good that the money was not needed on anything else - and most likely you can get most of it back if you decide to quit and sell your gear. But I hope it will not be that difficult for you to learn.

I do not know how much experience you have, if you were using film slr in the old days or not.

What you need to learn all about is ISO, Aperture and shutter speed. Those are the basics in photography, no matter what camera you use. Then of course you need to learn all about your camera and about how to compose a photo.

I suggest you look at this website, lot of good stuff here http://digital-photography-school.com/

Good luck!

Over the edge? You just took a pleasant walk. Over the edge would have been a new 4Ds. You made a smart purchase. Paid cash with the sale of unwanted items. Enjoy. Read the manual with the camera in hand so as to get familliar with the controls. Have fun

Great camera but don't make the mistake of trying to read and learn the whole manual, you never will take it all in.
Just read and learn the "bit" you want at the time and master that...then move on to the next thing you want to try.
With practice, more and more will become second nature.
Cheers,
Ron.

I joined last summer just to pick up tips on scanning my grandfathers old slides. I have since been watching the forums and trying to decide if I really want to buy a camera. Well I decided last weekend to physically check out the camera I had been researching for 9 months. Well my over thinking things and impulsiveness due to having ADHD kicked in after going to several several stores and no alcohol was involved. First I decided to only spend a few hundred on a entry level DSLR so it would not be a long learning curve. Two hours later I walked out of the store with a Nikon D7100, 5 lens, and assorted other shiny objects and $4,000.00 lighter in the wallet. My last camera is a 15 year old point and shoot Canon so after reading the manual on the new camera I think i am about to drown. This is going to be a long and painful learning curve for a 63 year old man. At the very least it will be interesting. Be prepared for a major on-slot questions coming from me.

Thanks for the reminder. I did almost the same thing last July. I didn't know I had NGAS at the time. I just thought it was OCD. Thanks to UHH, I have learned a lot about my D-7100 and how to use it properly to take good photographs. I have to explain to my wife that the rules of reason don't apply.

I'm confused. Going over the edge would seem to indicate you had some type of problem. Your activities seem perfectly normal to me. Since you seem to see things differently, take a deep breath and say this to yourself: "It is a hobby and therefore not governed by the rule of reason!" Repeat as necessary.

My mother always said "you can tell the men from the boys by the price of their toys. Welcome to the UHH. If nothing else, you have the possibility to stay out of trouble for quite a while. Unless, of course, you try to take illicit images. LOL. IMHO, you made an excellent decision on a camera. Have fun, visit the Hog often, don't be afraid to ask questions, and have a GREAT DAY!

Hi Neal, do you mind telling us what the 5 lenses are, - just in case we can save you from a zealous salesman trying to lift his quota.
5 sounds like a lot to buy straight up and I would like to know if he sold you a sensible kit.
