The photo works for me because, quite simply, it's pleasing to look at. 8-)

Although I have already commented on the image itself, I find the numerous comments about "rules are made to be broken" etc. etc. rather ironic. The rule of thirds was not broken in the image at all! Yet the thread plods along with everyone giving encouragement for Nat to break all those nasty rules. You darn rebel Nat! :D :-)

come on people - this is bland and boring. I don't like to be rude either but if we keep saying WOW AWESOME GREAT SHOT DON'T CHANGE A THING - then no one will ever learn.

As they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.....being the beholder here, I see much beauty in this shot. :-)

guess I am confused again, I always thought the saying was "beauty is in the eye of the 'beer' holder' but then maybe that was not about photography?

Thanks everyone for your comments. Docrob's opinion that it is boring gave me a lot to think about. I can see why some would think it is, indeed, boring, and that is partially why I submitted it. This is one of my favorite overlooks on the island; however, it is my experience and my view, and it doesn't necessarily translate into a photo that would appeal to others. If I could only photoshop one of Ivan's whales popping up out of the water, that would certainly perk it up a little.!!!

Love this site.

Joyfullee - I could not get the whole tree in the shot because the branches were touching the house just to the left of the shot. I couldn't compose it differently without trespassing.
Thanks for your input. I continue to struggle with composition.

the key to a great photograph is knowing where to stand. Move to the left a few steps.

And yet this bland, boring picture sold for $4.3 million:

Crop the tree and it does look somewhat like the multi-million dollar picture. Wonder how many people will try and take that type of picture, is this one of them?

Being facetious for a moment, it is difficult to break all the rules in one photo.
More serious nearly all rules are ultimately only suggestions that should serve as useful guides. The pro/con comments reminds us that opinions are subjective. I agree with those posting con comments that it is helpful to have the negatives (subjective or objective) pointed out. That is, as they have stated, how we grow and improve. If the intent was to convey a mood of tranquility or something similar, it did the job. If it was to convey something else, perhaps not so successful. In any case
it is valuable to all of us so that we can grow from the experience.

Thanks. I'm always hesitant to submit photos because of the high quality I see here; but it's a learning experience, and that's why I like this forum.
Don't worry about it. You should have seen the crap that I fave posted here. The cool part about this forum was all the advice and help that I have received. I too felt a little intimidated by looking at others' posts. It just made me raise the bar on myself a little. This helped a whole bunch. The fun part is that I still post crap a lot of the times but now I do not care. My crap has gotten better also.Lol.

I'll have to disagree - google "4 Million dollar photo", then come back & apologize. In MY opinion, this is a very interesting shot - I think the incomplete tree adds tension, and introduces the main subject - the fog on the horizon line. Very bland color-wise, yes, but "Reflected light is the photographer's only subject", and I find this an interesting subject.

Hey, Nat - try that in B & W, it may be even better !

I totally agree... It's okay to by-pass the rules!

Great shot.

Ok, so it's "bland and boring!" What suggestion do you have to improve? How about a "learning critique!" :)

There's nothing wrong with the composition, but it could definitely use a levels adjustment. The color is washed out.
You are so wrong! The picture is fine as is. I would gladly pay $4 million at auction. Darkened up, $3 million. Seriously, look at it again. I think it is far better than that picture overlooking the Rhine.

I get somewhat tired of "rules" as I'm retired and have left many of them behind. The reasons behind photographs are many and varied and don't always lend themselves to rules. It matters more how the picture affects one than any rule you can conceive of. I like your picture.
