Violation of the rule of thirds...but

I know I broke all the rules, but this big soggy wet cloud hanging over the water was too good to miss. This is looking from our island toward Cape Cod 4-5 miles away. Critiques welcome.

Thanks. I'm always hesitant to submit photos because of the high quality I see here; but it's a learning experience, and that's why I like this forum.

Did you really break it? The ground looks like its in the bottom third, and then cloud looks like it's in the top third. I think it looks really good!

Actually, the composition is pleasing and the land/water dividing line LOOKS to me like it's in the lower third.
The tree is pretty close to a "3rd" area and a lot of times it looks better to me to bring it to the edge as you have.
I think you did a good job.

Just remember, the 'rule of thirds' is probably better looked at as a 'suggestion of thirds'.
Compose and take a photo how *you* think it looks good, don't worry so much about adhering to some arbitrary standard that may not apply to what you are photographing. And... most importantly have fun out there!

I think it's a very good shot! Would have preferred to see the whole tree, but other than that, you have a fine piece of work there! :thumbup:

I tentatively agree with you...not a lot is happening in the shot...there is no "aha!" moment...
But for what it is...it was executed well.
That seems to be the status quo on this particular forum...any bland shot is considered AWESOME!....if anyone says otherwise usually they get a bit of a correction.
