I live here in AZ It would be better to go to the south rim at this time of the year. A must is eating at El Tovar in Grand Canyon Village. You can akso do a little of RT66 on the way, The falls is a 10 mile hike from the Indian reservation. And in my personal opinion please stay away from Grand Canyon West. Prices there are outrareous.

If you do decide to go to Havasupai Falls you will need to contact the tribe for a permit. There is a small hotel but be prepared to hike in all necessary supplies. Most people camp down there...the hotel is usually booked 1 year out.

We were there in January. Although cold at night the days were magnificent. You could drive all the roads, some of which get closed to busses only soon. There was almost no haze.

Be sure to be out there at sunrise and sunset. Seek to get some foreground in your photos. Drive the whole road.

If you are up to it you may be able to book a one- day mule ride. You need to book a year ahead for the overnight.

If your schedule allowed it I recommend Death Valley over the Grand Canyon. Unfortunately it is the opposite direction frm Las Vegas.

Driving from Vegas - go to the North Rim. Many great areas on the North Rim. Also consider Pages where the Antelope slot canyons are definitely worth seeing.

We stayed at Lake Powell Resort in Pages.

No s on Page. :-)

The main road north to Page was closed in January.

I would take a detour and go to Page AZ. Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend are some of the best places for spectacular photos. Also Zion and Bryce Canyons should be on your list of places to see. I found the Grand Canyon unbelievable to see but not a great location for WOW photos. The other parks are much more accessible and interesting for a photographer.

Bryce is even colder than the Grand Canyon. It goes up over 9,000 ft. But I agree it is better for photos.

We were there also in January.

The road north to Page was closed in January...it looked like for some time. You'd have to come around from the northwest if it still is. The road to the north rim was also closed when we went by although there wasn't a huge amount of snow. If either of those is on your agenda you need to be sure to check on road conditions. You only find out when you hit the closures and then you have hundreds of miles to detour. There aren't many roads in that country.

But you can easily get to the south rim from Las Vegas.

Going to be in Grand Canyon area in 2 weeks. Any recommendations for spots off the beaten track for some good interesting photos.

If there is a lot of ice wherever you go stay away from the edge.

I thought the North Rim was closed this time of year. It can be quite cold and windy this time of year. We were there in early November and lucked out with warm days in the 60s but the nights were cold.

From Grand Canyon Village west, we had to use the bus system to get to various points in the park. However the eastern section of the park toward the highway that brings you to or from Flagstaff is open to private vehicular traffic. The other advantage is that large portions of the park to the east offer wonderful views and are less crowded. There are plenty of hiking opportunities depending on your ability and interest. Allow more time than you think for every activity. There is so much to see and photograph that you also need time to stop and just enjoy the environment. Check your equipment and supplies carefully before you enter the park. Most things are much more expensive in the park. I was glad we remembered flashlights.

The road to Page has a bypass through the reservation, around the area that collapsed. So, you can still get there from the south, it just takes 45-60 minutes longer than previously.

We've been to the South Rim a fair number of times. We've done it as a day trip out of Phoenix. For Valentine's day a couple of years ago, we stayed overnight in Williams, then took the train. It had snowed overnight and they were still clearing the walkways when we got up there. It was magnificent. Another time, we stayed over at the Maswik lodge and we walked along the rim after dinner. It was an almost full moon. Words can't describe it.
It's different every time you go.
