Not entirely true and there are firms such as this that provide the same warrantee as Nikon http://www.factoryrepaircenter.com/ .

Lots of foaming around trying to buy cheap. The key to gray market is to understand the manufacturer uses a gray market channel (meaning non-authorized distributor) as a way to dump excess inventory back onto the market. This usally results from miscasting demand and overbuilding.
Ask yourself one question: How risk adverse am I really?
Your new highly complex gray market camera is totally devoid of manufacturer support. I am way too conservative to be on my own in this matter. Nice to hear the good folks at B&H have their own Warranty; check it out before buying if you want a safety net. Otherwise, go for it!

So where are these brand new cameras bought from in the first place?? the answer has to be be from the Nikon factory itself, i think it stinks, they have to sell the cameras in the first place then refuse to honour the warranty.

I can tell you this in San Francisco Ca lots of the camera stores in the tourist area of the city are not Canon & Nikon authorized at all so be careful where you buy. Always ask if they are authorized dealers.

Interesting terms from Factory Repair Center:

"The digital still camera equipment registered below is guaranteed to operate according to manufacturerÂ’s specifications for a period of 1 year from the date of purchase, or we shall repair same to operate properly. This service contract may be purchased for New Products with at least ninety (90) days remaining on the original manufacturerÂ’s warranty".
Seems like they aren't interested in gray market. They have a 1-year digital camera warranty plan at "under $1,000". I am sure there are other choices tho.

According to the explanation offered through the above posted link, if you receive a U.S. warranty and registration card with your purchase, Nikon will honor it. Wondering if all of the major manufacturers have same policy.

I don't think MT was saying the process of sending the camera overseas for warranty work was simple. I believe he was saying the answer to the pose question was simple.... "NO USA warranty"

That is the way I read it too.

I just took a cruise to St Maarten in the Caribbean and to my amazement I was able to purchase a brand new, not refurbished, Nikon 800E with a 28 to 300 mm lens for $3,300 dollars and no sales tax duty free. If you're in the market for a new high end camera with full warranties, it may pay to take a quick vacation. That set up priced in the USA is in the $4,800 range

RIGHT FROM NIKONS WEB SITE.
Question
Nikon Digital Imaging Warranty
Answer
Nikon Service Warranty Policy
Digital Imaging Products

- Your Nikon equipment is warranted against any manufacturing defects for one year from the date of purchase
at the authorized Nikon Service Facilities.

- The warranty card is issued only at the time of original purchase; it is non-transferable.

- The warranty must be presented at the Nikon service facility before any repair(s) is claimed under warranty.

- If the customer is unable to produce the proof of purchase ( i.e. receipts or invoices ), warranty period will be
deemed from the date that the equipment arrives at the authorized dealers. Hence, please take note to keep
your proof of purchase safely.

- Damages caused by accident, mishandling, self / 3rd party repairs, sand or water damages are not covered
under this warranty.

- If the customer wishes to send their equipment to the Service Facilities by postage, all logistic or
transportation costs (including insurance coverage) will be bear by the customer. Nikon is not
responsible for the tracking or damages caused during the delivery of the equipments.

- The warranty for Digital Imaging Products (e.g. COOLPIX, DSLR body) is valid only in the country
where you purchased the equipment. Film camera and lens products are covered under
international warranty.
Example: A digital camera purchased in Singapore will not have the repair covered under warranty in Hong
Kong.

Sounds good, but add the price of the cruise which I'm sure is more than $300.00 dollars and it's not such a good deal.

Please. Use some basic common sense. I feel fairly certain the O.P. didn't go on the cruise just to buy a camera. The camera was a lucky find. Even if he hadn't bought the camera, he'd have paid the cost of the cruise. Besides, the money he saved on the camera kit is probably enough to cover the entire cost of the cruise.

One other guy here posted a snide comment about "Good luck with the Nikon Oil sensor." What does that have to do with the topic of the thread?

Please, people, if you cannot contribute to the thread in a useful manner, then drop down the page to the "Chit-Chat" section. BS is permissible there.

I think that was the D600, not the D800 or D800e.

Regarding Warranty Service, nearly all high end complex products and all camera manufacturers have a similar policy regarding warranties and if purchased "Grey Market", the US subsidiary will not honor the warranty. Many, noteably Nikon, will not provide any manufacturers repair service on Grey Market equipment. Nikon also often requires proof of purchase from an authorized dealer (save warranty cards and store receipts) before performing any repairs. I have had a number of cameras, lenses and flashes repaired by Nikon, all done excellently, but only on official US purchased equipment with documentation.

I have been told that there was a federal court case ruling that required Nikon USA to honor International Warranties, but that you had to threaten legal action and cite the exact ruling. I have not been able to find any reference to that ruling. I only buy non-grey market equipment from authorized dealers because I need to be able to get my equipment serviced.
