Cameras are cheaper in St Maarten

I just took a cruise to St Maarten in the Caribbean and to my amazement I was able to purchase a brand new, not refurbished, Nikon 800E with a 28 to 300 mm lens for $3,300 dollars and no sales tax duty free. If you're in the market for a new high end camera with full warranties, it may pay to take a quick vacation. That set up priced in the USA is in the $4,800 range

It's a Nikon international warranty.

But does Nikon USA honor this warranty?

I've been there. You are absolutely right. I was surprised by the selection and low prices. My 14-24 was $300.00 cheaper.

Did you pay the duty, on your return to the states or are you now a smuggler?

Absolutely not. Its a "grey market" purchase and any warranty work will need to be done overseas.

WOW..that is a great price. I was just on a cruise, of course I did not have the cash at the time, but go to know. I loved St. Maarten and would have no problem going back there in the future. Can I ask you where you got yours from there?

That was my thought as well. Later I Googled Nikon International Warranty and came up with this which explains it pretty well. ;)

They have to send their gear overseas for warranty, if its still covered. Simple.

good to know. I priced some Canon gear in Nassau and in Mexico and it was more expensive than I could buy it here. However, I would not buy any gear if Canon USA would not honor the warranty. Good luck shipping it overseas and hoping to get it back....plus the shipping/insurance costs would be sky-high. A lot of electronic items including cameras are built specific to the area they are sold in, so frequently parts for those are not available in the USA.

Actually not that simple...
I once purchased Revox hi-fi equipment. One failed. I sent it back to Switzerland where I had purchased it. Warranty worked. On its way back the custom stopped it. 'Did you pay taxes on that?'. It became a nightmare and while the stuff was expensive I gave it up, it has likely been sold or destroyed by now. (1986, Detroit airport custom).
