Hey...I dated Elvira when she lived with her parents in Montvale, New Jersey as a kid. She was strange even back then. LOL.

I had to laugh at the slice bread read. I still remember my first year in college and we all had a slide rule in our back pockets. Then one day a kid brought a 3 pound hand held calculator to class that cost him around $400. I suddenly knew then that the world was going to be different. If only I had bought Apple or Microsoft stock back when.....

Ah yes...the "BOWMAR BRAIN". You should have seen old Steve Wazniak when he came running into the Stanford Computer club with his first prototype that made musical tones. It was a rat's nest of wire wrap and about 100 ICs with a punch tape reader for programming.

I also got a new Pavilion HP desktop with Windows 8. Crashed everyday, sometimes twice a day. Did the upgrade to 8.1. Did a complete system reset back to factory settings. Now it only crashes 3 or 4 times a week. I consider the system to unstable to risk anything important. This machine is only used for surfing, e-mail and as an expensive typewriter.
My Vista machine works fine with all my photo editing software.

You forgot to mention that you will be returning this faulty new system, right?

There's more to this story than the OS or the HP computer. Wish I knew what other programs are being run or installed that might make this system crash or what files were transferred from the old system that might have contained malware.
This problem is not the system or the computer but probably the operator who is trying to do or set something in the system wrong.

This sounds like the typical problems that happen when 2 conflicting antivirus programs are running on the same machine.

I have an Lenovo "W" series pro laptop with Windows 8 and it was a learning curve to learn to use it properly. When I finally adapted to it, Microsoft sent me an automatic update to 8.1.

I updated and it was a great improvement over plain 8 but again, it's a learning curve.

For the past 20 years, I used nothing but DELL laptops custom configured for me at a typical cost of $4K+, I had numerous issues with them but worked through it.

I found this Lenovo I have now and guess what, I love it.
It wasn't a money issue, my I.T. person recommended it to me as a better choice. He was correct.

My "W-Series" laptop is an quad core I-7 with 16 gigs of RAM, a decent sized 7,200 rpm hard drive, plenty of USB ports, hook ups for HDMI, Monitors, Video out AND an IEEE 1394 fire wire port!!!
It has a NO GLARE screen, HQ webcam, back-lighted and overhead lighted keyboard with differing illumination levels and multiple pointing medias.
It has the finger button, touch pad & multiple touch pad keys for use as a mouse.

I swear, if this thing had female sex organs, I'd marry it!!!

Sorry for that to our women readers.

Hi BigGWells, I just got off the phone from Dell, (1-800 624 9897), and they confirm they ARE selling new computer WITH Windows 8 and 8.1 and that they are soon discontinuing selling computers with Windows 7 on them. Must have been some mis-communication going on somewhere.

I think you have a definition problem when you say that a firewall is the same as an antivirus program. They are not the same thing. Firewall will protect you when you're on the web, but not when you try to open emails or attachments. Having a continuously running firewall like the one from MS and having a single antivirus program running at the same time is perfectly fine. The problem comes when you have more than one antivirus program running all the time. One program always thinks the other is a virus and you end up with a system conflict. I also have Firefox, MS WEB tools, AVG Antivirus running constantly and AVG System tuneup, SuperAntiSpyware, CCcleaner, and MalwareBytes on my system without any conflicts but I activate these programs manually about once a week or so and don't let them run continually. I use the FREE versions of these programs and update them weekly for definitions updates.

I'm not saying an antivirus program is a firewall. Read slowly here: I am saying that at least one antivirus program that I use puts it's own firewall on the system, and thus you will often get a conflict between the antivirus programs installed firewall and windows own installed firewall. And you don't need several antivirus programs installed to get a conflict. I use only one.
A lot of people on here need to learn to read for comprehension, not for what they think someone said.

I think you're talking about WIN8 PRO and not WIN8 or WIN8.1
The latest windows operating system will be around for a long time so get used to it. There are work-arounds like "CLASSIC SHELL" and there's the option to upgrade for free to WINDOWS 8.1 through MICROSOFT, but I think you got your information all screwed up about this OS being only for commercial use. Microsoft is attempting to make platforms similar for all devices such as iPhones, tablets, and computers, but without the touch screen, this is somewhat difficult and the addition of outside programs makes this somewhat tedious when we've gotten used to the properties menu on WINDOWS 7. Win 8 and Win 8.1 seem more stable and the implementation of new drivers for peripherals seems to be going well. Patches are being released daily by video card companies like NVIDEA and RADEON to make even the most complex of video renderings more pleasant.

All I can tell you is if you don't like WINDOWS 8 or 8.1, then you better shell out those big bucks and buy an APPLE or MACBOOK and get used to the SNOWLEOPARD OS or learn to use LENEX or UNIX or wait a few years till the next iteration of OS is released but by that time the intended mental interface might be suffering from Alzheimers.

After the horror stories about 8, I decided to wait until they got it straightened out. Maybe 8.15 or so.
If staying with 7 is not feasible, I'm going to vote with my feet. Apple, here I come.
