I think you may have a conflict between windows firewall and a virus protection program firewall. If both are attempting to work you will get a conflict and should turn one off. Usually the windows firewall as antivirus program will not work correctly if you turn off theirs.
As far as antivirus programs; the computer most likely came with a trial version of Norton (mine did). I have tried that in the past and found it too be a resource hog that really slows the computer. I have used McAfee for most of ten years and am generally very satisfied. Turning of some items like checking each website you go to makes it work quicker with seemingly little impact on its major functions.
A word of caution: don't sign up with mcafee for automatic renewal of their software. The program can be found much cheaper online that what they charge on their website. It's just that you have to spend some time looking. December is usually best to find a deal, or after January if you can wait. A three license program is best if you have a desktop and laptop or any combo of three or less.

I had to laugh at the slice bread read. I still remember my first year in college and we all had a slide rule in our back pockets. Then one day a kid brought a 3 pound hand held calculator to class that cost him around $400. I suddenly knew then that the world was going to be different. If only I had bought Apple or Microsoft stock back when.....

You all might as well get used to win8 and that style of interface. It is a push to the tablet style computer. In the near future desktop and laptop designs will be a thing of the past. Tablet design is here for the long run.

I read an article last week that said all of the major players at Microsoft in the deployment and construction of Win8 have been fired and/or replaced, right up to CEO. Seems to be in part a major reaction to the unpopularity of the OS and may be a signal that this style OS may not in fact be taking over the industry and at least one step back can be expected in the next release (Win9). Just speculation on the authors part, but a very knowledgeable industry writer who makes a living following this stuff may have some clue as to what will happen.

Norton IS a virus..

Norton's bulk antivirus program went out with Jackie Gleason's Norton. It slows system performance down to a crawl. There's a lot better and faster antivirus programs out there these days than that old clunker. AVG and AVAST or even McAfee are better, faster and take a lot less space on your HDD.

Vista was such a dismal failure that W8 seemed like the second coming. Microsoft I guess was trying to get a pc to look and run like a Mac. Interesting to see what W9 will be like and if we can load it into our W8 pc's. Probably.

I recently purchased a hp pavillion with windows 8 having a problem with windows loading telling me it's a firewall issue but it's not anyone having the same problem? When I go to share my pictures from adobe elements it's also telling me a problem with the internet connection but that's working on my iPad.

Have you downloaded the 8.1 update? I have Windows 8 on two computers and have had no problems at all. In fact, I'd say it's a huge improvement over previous O.S.'s. Have you checked your Windows Firewall to confirm if it is indeed on or off?

Wow, all these comments and only a couple of people actually helps the OP. Well I'm going to do the same. Best comment so far? Norton is a hog, haven't used it for years. What?? I've used Norton every year since my Win 95 days and it continues to get better each year Using 360 for the last 4 years. Windows 8.1 is a good OS, you just have to be ready for multi-platform usage. Laptops and desktops are not the only use out there anymore.

Support is already effectively ended if you have to reinstall for any reason. I tried several months ago and updates would no longer download.

Glad you like it. Have used it on and off and have always found it slows whatever computer I used it on. My nephew has also had problems (he is a professional computer tech) as has several of my friends. May be brand specific some say but I have tried it on HP, Compac, and Acer computers. Less than stellar performance on all.

I think you have a definition problem when you say that a firewall is the same as an antivirus program. They are not the same thing. Firewall will protect you when you're on the web, but not when you try to open emails or attachments. Having a continuously running firewall like the one from MS and having a single antivirus program running at the same time is perfectly fine. The problem comes when you have more than one antivirus program running all the time. One program always thinks the other is a virus and you end up with a system conflict. I also have Firefox, MS WEB tools, AVG Antivirus running constantly and AVG System tuneup, SuperAntiSpyware, CCcleaner, and MalwareBytes on my system without any conflicts but I activate these programs manually about once a week or so and don't let them run continually. I use the FREE versions of these programs and update them weekly for definitions updates.

I'm far from a strong Norton advocate, but I think a lot of the distaste for Norton is based on passed experiences. Their current antivirus offering (not their 360 package) does not slow system performance down to a crawl---at least no more than McAfee does.

Having said this, it's always been my position that antivirus protection should be free, and there are decent ones to choose from now, so why pay for this? Even Microsoft's free offering isn't that bad. Of course, our risk level will primarily be based on our behavior, so if we want to reduce the chances of getting infected by malware in general, we need to change our behavior.

I'm not using a service provider like those in the USA here and our proximity to China and all of their web "chinanigans" and web crap is constantly showing up in my SPAM inbox, but I just clean out the box through "DELETE" and only open stuff from known sources. All the rest of the popup crap is screened out if you clean your system regularly.

In my humble opinion, no matter how improved Norton is now, it will always be considered a resource hog. I really don't want some sewer worker named "(Ed) NORTON" digging into my storage space. LOL.
