Here's a link that compares the two:

I haven't had either camera. The closet I can get is that I have a friend that shoots a 50D and loves it and a bother in law with a D5100 and he loves it. I don't think you will be dissatisfied with either camera. They both are a great instrument. God luck. Keep us informed on your decision

Welcome to the forum. You are among friends so just take your shoes off and stay a while. There are some very knowledgeable photographers on this forum who are more than willing to help.

I just noticed that there is a 50d for sale on the forum. If you are in the U.K. this possibly could be a good deal for you

Nikon has come out with the D5300, about $50.00 US more. But is lighter and has a greatly improved depth of color, you might want to look at that one also.

If you rely on snapsort, toss out the scores for popularity. The scores will then be a toss up.

Another independent, direct comparison:

I am a Canon guy and although Nikon won out those 2 comparisons, it should be noted that the 60d is no slouch though and takes very good pictures.

The one thing reading though was i was surprised that the 60d was weather sealed. I was under the impression (even when i bought it) that it was NOT weather sealed. So that was news to me. I can't even begin to tell you how many shots i may have lost out on.

But as far as numbers go, always keep in mind its the person using the camera. A camera is only as good as the person using it. Also there is always photoshop (or any other editing software) if something looks a little off or doesn't look right.

just a few things on the snapsort Nikon Data though.

ISO 25,600? does anyone really need an iso that high? i can say that I have never shot above 1800. Also the Canon is expandable to that much if i recall (i don't have my camera handy at this moment), but regardless, just a gimmick.

In Camera HDR...That's nice. BUT i got a program that can do that for me if i would like :)

8 lenses difference between cameras....Not a deal breaker.

i don't know how the nikon is "slightly thinner" when they both came in at 3.1" ...Shouldn't that have been a tie? however they awarded the "win" to Nikon? Really?

Focus points i agree Canon got killed on 39-9. However I can say, for me PERSONALLY, i have maybe used 2 or 3 at the very most on my camera.

Lighter...I think that's personal preference . I personally prefer a slightly heavier camera. Again, that's my personal preference. It says its about 30% lighter (the nikon), but the bigger question is how many people could actually tell the difference if both are in their hands at the same time. I think if both were held most would say close to even.

I don't shoot video at all, so for me the contest between the 2 is non existent.

So with only a couple noticed differences, the 2 cameras are closer than they would like you to believe. Nikon DOES edge out. I admit that. It pains me to admit that too.

But remember its about personal preferences at the end of the day and what you expect from your camera (not to mention what you plan to use it for). For me, I have my loyalty (to Canon) so i will always shoot Canon.

Whatever you choose, just make sure you learn it and learn it well, and what you will be able to do with it can be endless. In this day an age, for whatever camera you are using is missing, there will be some sort of program to help fix the image for you. Alot of folks say get it right in camera the first time. They are right. But i think they should be saying, Get it right as much as possible the first time, that way when it comes to post processing, it will take less work to correct any minor nuances that may be there.

That's my opinion and i'm sticking to it :)

Vet, if it's a wash, get the Canon because the lenses are better.
The lenses are NOT a wash. ;-)

I know zip about a 60D but I own a Nikon 5200 with 2 kit lenses. Either the lenses suck, or the camera sucks. I've recently watched a youtube on the 5200 and the guy said the kit lenses suck the big one. I own them and know for sure he is right. I've been shooting with SLR's since the mid 70's. This is my 7th camera. 2 35mm film SLR's, a Pentax, and Canon. A Kodak DC280 point and shoot digital, a Panasonic FZ18 bridge, a Nikon p90 bridge, and now a Nike 5200 DSLR, so I'm not exactly new at this. I really wish my wife hadn't bought me this thing. Someone told me I could stick a $1200 lens on it and it would take sharp pictures... He might be right, but personally, I'd be looking for a different camera. If you do get the Nikon, get at least the 5300, and don't buy the kit lenses, at least not the ones that came with my camera. People say it's not the camera it's the cameraman. Well, if your lens won't take sharp as a tack pictures, neither will the camera, or the cameraman.

Not saying anything about the 60D mind you, cause I don't own one. Also, most reviews are worthless, Snapsort is a joke for example. I did a comparison of my Panasonic fx18 and Nikon p90 after owning both for a long time. Their review was pathetic, and wrong. I don't think they even used both camera's.

Personally, I'd be looking at Panasonic, Sony or Olympus for a good quality mirror less if I wanted interchangeable lens camera. A good DSLR probably will cost you $2 G's for camera, and the same for each lens. Cool if you are earning a living with them I guess.
