I just took delivery of an SX50 to use as an every day "carry always" camera. I have a Canon 7D also, but I wanted something small and light I could just have handy all the time. The pictures I've taken so far are just around the house and not very interesting - just snaps I made to start learning the camera. However, it does take very nice photographs. Later I'll try to post a few if I get anything worth sharing.

In the mean time, my impressions:

1. It does take great photos for what it is. I love that it will shoot RAW images!

2. The zoom is phenomenal

3. The Camera is very light and easy to carry (on the down side, it does feel a little flimsy)

4. Loads of features and settings for automated settings (Also can go full manual of course)

5. The flash has to be manually raised. Not a big deal and probably helps keep the weight down.

6. The camera is fairly small, with a small grip. I have fairly small hands and it even seems a little too small from me. If someone had larger hands, the grip might seem a bit inadequate.

7. I had read somewhere that it didn't come with a charger. Mine did come with a charger. The charger does not give any indication of the percentage of charge like my Canon 7D charger does. This charger shows you only that it is fully charged of not fully charged. If it is less than 100% you have no idea whether it is 10% charged or 99% charged.

8. At ISOs above 400 you start getting a good deal of noise.

9. The EVF is "ok." I had read bad reviews about the EVF, but I didn't find it all that bad. Certainly adequate for composing a shot. The fact that it isn't a super high resolution image isn't a big deal for me. It is adequate for the task IMHO.

10. The fully articulating LCD is a very nice feature.

11. It has an optional "Focus area zoom" that will cause the area of focus to enlarge (if you have that feature selected)

12. The main selector wheel on the back of the camera takes a little getting used to. This is because it is "multi-function". The outer wheel is rotated to select a menu item's settings, with the center part of the control being a push-to-set" button. Also, you must push the top, bottom, left or right sides of the whole thing to select main menu functions. Sometimes I find myself pushing/changing a selection inadvertently while trying to rotate the wheel, or vice versa. Like I said, it takes a little getting used to.

So far I really like the camera, and can't wait to take it out and try it out in earnest.

Thank you everyone for your replies. I did search the forums for images, many were good but the image quality didn't seem to be something I would want to print out an 12x18 of and hang on my wall.
now I am looking at the images in this thread and I am rethinking the camera.
Uuglypher & Stanley your images look great! I should have asked to have images stored so I see them larger.
Elliern the link you posted to Tony Brittons site really makes me want to give it a try.
thank you again for your replies. I still have a few weeks to make up my mind.

12X18 Prints hmmmm.

My guess is you will have difficulty getting the quality you will need for that kind of print from the SX50 - especially if you want it at high zoom ranges. The camera is good but to expect 12x18 prints may be a little unreasonable. Normal range images (i.e. 200 mm and down) may do it for you tho.

Not an expert so hopefully some other folks with printing experience can chime in and provide better info.

I just took deliver of my Canon SX50. Today I decided to just go out and about and see what I could find to take pictures of. Ended up at a local wildlife preserve. Here are a few pictures from today's adventure.

I haven't had mine very long....still a bit of a learning curve for me. I have a nikon D7000 as well, and I tend to nit pic my shots when comparing. But still, light, convenient, very reasonable price and great zoom range. I'm not sorry I got it.
