Hello to all uhh members.
I was having a discussion with my wife yesterday and it got me thinking about the title of this post. I had just ordered some more equipment from Adorama and amazon.I got my Diffuser yesterday and my wife asked me what that was. I explained it to her. After the explanation she made a comment to me and said you will never stop buying for your photography. Now that my 4 kids are grown up now my 2 daughters out of collage both my sons in the military I have found some new found wealth(lol). The question still stands how much is to much. My total investment so far about $20,000 over the years. Not to bad considering it is photography. :-D :-D

Interesting, yesterday my wife asked me the same question when I return from the camera store with another toy. I bought used nikon D5100. I have two older dslr, but I wanted better ISO. I explained to her about ISO, I don't think she was impressed by high ISO of d5100. Then she said: do you really enjoy photography or just playing with the equipment? It's not the same thing.

Do you think it's a good question for some of us?

As a Middle aged, middle class wage earner, I can relate to your sentiment. For the very rich who have had it all, middle years and beyond are often a time to "give back" to those less fortunate. For the very poor, what matters most, is filling their immediate needs. For those in between, myself, included, much of life is spent balancing needs (food, clothing, shelter, education, medical care, and family responsibilities) against wants (toys, hobbies, vacations, etc) As a general practice physican making a low 6 figure income, while living in NYC and paying off an expensive divorce and saving for my son's tuition, quite a few of my wants for deferred. Now that my son is on his own, and my "ex" payed off, it is time for me, myself, and I As I approach the "big 60", with fewer years to indulge my "wants", I find that the line between wants and needs is becoming blurred

Has any one ever heard of the old adage "One camera. one lens?

After you learn your camera and lens inside our and backwards you DON'T need a new piece of equipment. Problem is most of us think we need a news lens or camera because it's either new or someone else has it so "me to". We don't really know what we have got but we "Think we need More"
I have stuck to the one camera one lens for about 5 years, works good. Get the lens that covers about 90% of your work and you'll be ok...........................

I was in the military a long time ago and there was saying, “if you gottem smokem”. You establish what your priorities are. A trip to could be easily $10,000 and it only last for a few weeks.

sounds like you did a great job with your kids. getting them self-sufficient is rare these days. so now it is definitely your turn!!!

my daughter is 42 and my son is 39..........they have more money and better jobs than i have...

so I buy camera and music gear...my wife buys scrapbooking stuff.

it's so great to be alive!!!!

nothing goes on a credit card unless it can be paid off when the bill comes due.

It's a hobby, therefore it is not subject to the rule of reason! That is exactly what I told the Bankruptcy Judge!

ah, equipment. i had always hoped there would be one lens and one camera which would do it all. and there isn't.
looking at what i currently have.
2 rangefinders, leica and nikon
3 slrs, nikon leicaflex, minolta
3 medium format cameras, bronica, hasselblad, mamiya
1 medium format technical camera, linhof
1 5x4 technica camera, linhof
3 light meters, gossen, pentax
5 tripods
and god only knows how many lenses.

the point of all this is each one does something the others do not, and i've had need of these over the years, and still do. if i figured out all i have currently it would be somewhere south of 25-30k. a lot of money, but the photos provide a lot more memories.
so, if you use it then buy if. if you don't then sell it.

I have found photography is actually a cheap hobby. I've bought several lenses, bodies, light stands, bags, and even planned trips just to take photos. No if your looking a really expensive hobby, buy a airplane. In my Cessna 172, I had to install a new GPS, to keep up with the Government regs for navigation. Total cost for the GPS, $15000, plus, installation into the cockpit by a licensed mechanic, another $1200. I also needed to update a radio, another $11000, and $2000 for installation. All this required by the FAA, to meet standards. Today, since the weather is clear, and good I'll take a check ride, and shoot some approaches. I'll be up about 2 hours @ 12 gallons per hour, at $5.60 per gallon of av-gas. So, you think photography is expensive?

I am with you on this one. Hard not to spend money on photography. Once the last of 4 kids moved out, it was as though I hit the lottery. Enjoy while you can, you can't take it with you.

Asking a serious photographer to make due with one camera/lens combo is like asking Bill Clinton or one of the Kennedy clan to make do with one woman

like when I played tennis and would buy a new racket and the next day thought how much I improved but a week later back to normal- same with photography buy the equipment take a picture and late compare it with one taken 20 years ago with nikkormat camera and is there really any difference- this is one reason I try to avoid digital so I do not get caught up in the constant change - but heck just brought a Nikon v1
