Have an HP Photosmart printer for years and it works flawlessly. the only problem I had was with connectivity and was solved by downloading a driver update from the HP site. The driver that came with the printer when new is almost always out of date.

That's true, but at least by starting again with the original drivers and then downloading updates will eliminate corrupted driver problems. Might also try using another USB port to see if the problem is in the port itself.

I have a couple of hp all in ones they are about 2 years old and have at times had very heavy use and are still ok .
I have had Epsons they don't last but ink for them is usually cheaper.
Since your printer is coming up to 6 years old it is probably time to get a new one. For yours to have lasted this long it has done very well.

I wanted to print out some pictures the other day and my printer-a HP Photosmart C6280- tells me I am out of one ink color. I put in a new one, and the same thing happened. Thinking maybe I had a bad cartridge I bought another one and it still is telling me the same thing. Any thoughts from all you helpful Hoggs about what I should do now? Is this fixable or do I need to look for a new printer?

Try this.

The problem with the cartridge is it may not registering with the printer due to the contacts on the cartridge and printer are not making a good enough contact with each other.
I would first remove the cartridge and clean the contacts with some toilet tissue, being careful not to damage the contacts.
Then you might try taking some paper towel and cut a section that is the width of the cartridge and fold the paper towel up end over end making a little wedge or pillow square. Do not make this too thick.
With the cartridge in the printer place the paper towel on top of the cartridge and close the cartridge lever the holds the cartridge down in place and then close the printer lid.
Be extra careful not to apply too much force to get the latch to hold in place, or you risk breaking the latch.

You might have to play around a little just write down or remember what you did and change it back when done. After i applied the change i printed a test page from the computer Printer Properties and it worked. The other thing i did as well was printed a scanned page so maybe there is a resourve for all the colors that is in the printer as well who knows but this saved me $25. and dealing with tech support.

This is what worked for me today..

Reset the All-in-One to the factory default settings by using these instructions:
1) Press Red Eye Removal & Print Photos button simultaneously
2)Enter Special Key Combo is displayed on the screen.
Press and release in sequence "Red Eye Removal", "Print Photos", "Red Eye Removal"
Display should say "Support" and display the FW rev XXXXX.
3) Press Right Arrow button until "Reset Menu" is displayed. Press OK.
4) Press Right arrow until "Semi full Reset" is displayed.
5) Press OK.
Now, check the functionality of the All-in-One. If the issue persists, please perform the next troubleshooting steps

I've had it happen on my Epson printer too & I had genuine Epson cartridges... The printer refused to recognize them as genuine.... I use a Canon printer now...

Hi Kathy,
Are you using HP Original ink cartridges? Aftermarket cartridges will almost always show as out of ink even though they may be brand new.

I have had HP photo printers for at least six years, have always used aftermarket cheap cartridges (hundreds) and have only had this happen twice and it turned out the cartridge electronics were defective in both cases.

How about a big Canon for $98.

I am the dummy here but I did this once and found I had replaced the wrong color of magenta. My 6280 did quit a while back and I liked it so well that I bought a used one from ebay. Printers can be frustrating. Hope you get it fixed.

I'm sorry for your problem but in my experience HP is junk. Never again will i buy anything from HP.

Hey there, olcoach, that's not nice. I have HP and Epson printers and never had any problens untill I replaced my computer with a 64 bit machine. I had My HP Deskjet 932C ever since they came out, about 6 years. I use my new HP for all my defult printing and the Epson for printing photos and DVDs. The HP is faster but the Epson prints better photos...... I like them both.:-) :-)

I had a HP8500 that did that also. Help desk ran me thru a bunch of stuff, changed inks etc. Went to move printer and spilled magenta on me, carpet and hardwood floor. Out of warantey, bought an 8600.
The ink delivery system had changed dramatically. Not all good. I own hp8600 , Epson 837 and Epson R2000. Don't spill ink on yourself,

Rumor has it that Henry Ford said (about the Model T auto)
"I'll give you the car if you buy all of your replacement parts from me".

Sounds like Canon is saying the same thing except substitute printer and ink cartridges.

I have had that same problem happen to me twice both times on an HP that was a couple of years old and out of warranty. Best bet is to replace when new ink is needed as the cost of the ink offsets the cost of the new printer considerably. I have been using a Kodak printer lately and have been happy with it but am now looking to upgrade to a larger page size and am looking into Epson and Canon, not sure which yet.

looks like lots of options to sort through. I want to check and see what ink is available around here--smalltown USA
