I can't argue with the F6. But I always drooled over the F5, so I have to list that second. It's so tempting to pick one up used today...

I always wanted the one with the big square interchangeable prism on top. It was really ugly, but I still wanted one. Don't know what it was called. But that was a long time ago, in land, far, far away. And now I know better!

The F4? It had an interchangeable prism, and was very clunkly. But an amazing camera.

I'm thinking you are referring to the Nikon F with the FtN finder shown here?

In Nikon this is my list:=
1st Place.... Nikon D4
2nd Place.... Nikon D800
3rd Place.... Nikon D3x

Why just Nikon? because you all ready have the lenses to fit?
To me the we are talking here about dinosaurs, The latest Nikon is the Nikon DF based on a dinosaur look. Coming soon the D4x... nothing exciting here.
If I was going to buy now from scratch I would start with the Sony A7R... light weight and the future. Full of tech and fantastic new features and great lenses on there way. Lot's more to come as well. Sony also make the sensors for the Nikon D4 and DF... hmmmm... I love Nikon in the past but not in the future... unless they come up with something to match Sony. Just my thoughts on where we are heading. It is a wonderful time... no more lugging around heavy gear...any one else agree?

I think having the choice is nice, different things are more important to different people. I think the Sony offerings are very impressive.

Before I would get a Sony A7R, I would need to spend enough time with it to decide if I was comfortable with the electronic view finder. That may be the future, but it is still an evolving technology, so it may or may not suit different people today.

About the sensors, and the Nikon/Sony comparison, Sony did not make the D4 sensor. They did, however, make the D800/D800E sensor, which Nikon designed. And that's the same sensor that is in the A7R. I have a difficult time calling the company which designed that sensor a "dinosaur" and needing to "match" the company which fabricated the sensor. Between the designer and the manufacturer, there is a simple way Nikon and Sony told us which is more important: Nikon got to use it first, and Sony had to wait a year.

Hello Amehta
Yes you are right about Nikon making the D4... I meant the D800 but had a moment of memory loss... need a new processor in my head :) As for the sensor being designed by Nikon you are wrong the D800 sensor was designed by Sony.

They had to wait a year because they had to fit it into a smaller body with impact. They were looking to make it easier for us the photographers to carry around full frame camera's.
Hey just look at the Sony RX1...full frame and superb for a compact camera. Look at the size of it and the quality of the glass on it. Am I write or wrong but is Sony not the most talked about camera's this year? Imagine if Nikon or Canon came out with what Sony have? This would big a massive wow in the photography world but they are lagging behind at the moment to Sony. Just my opinion. I love the Nikon D4 for what it have given me. But let's move on now. Technology has gone far past where Nikon are now. The next camera to come out of Nikon will be the Nikon D4x...yawn...based on the heavy weight D4 at a heavy weight price... again. Solid and robust yes. Great image quality but hey it's old hat and it has not been released yet. Sorry but I love Nikon for the past but hey I am in the future now. How many people on UHH hate carrying all there gear with them? how many hate these heavy lenses? to go with the heavy body? I still think Nikon can suprise us all with something wonderful but have not seen the evidence of it yet. Just my opinion.

Hello Amehta br Yes you are... (show quote)

Here's the Chipworks page for the Sony IMX094AQP chip. Unfortunately the document is $16,000, so we're stuck with this
Quote:
At the heart of the D800 is a brand new Nikon-developed sensor that boasts 36.8 million pixels in total, with a maximum effective output of 36.3MP. Its ISO span is 100-6400 natively, expandable to a range of 50 ('Lo1') to 25,600 ('Hi2') equivalent. Nikon's highest resolution DSLR to date, the D800 more than doubles the pixel count of the flagship D4.

From your link, it seems that Nikon partnered with Sony to manufacture the chip because Sony could use a 0.18 micron process, while Renesas seems limited to a 0.25 micron process, affecting how small the pixels can be.

On the D800 product page, they talk about Nikon's original technology, and the first item is the "Nikon FX-format CMOS sensor with 36.3 effective megapixels". I think this means one of three things:
* The Nikon marketing people took serious liberties, and Sony didn't object.
* Nikon paid Sony to let them call it a Nikon sensor even though Sony was entirely responsible for it.
* Nikon designed the sensor, contracted with Sony to manufacture it, and the agreement included the right to call it a "Nikon sensor".

I agree that it is possible that Nikon's sole contribution to this sensor is money. I think it's more likely that they contributed the design as well.

I think "made by" is too vague, it does not differentiate between who designed it and who manufactured it. But the first link from that page is to the Chipworks page I linked, with the "Nikon-developed" words.

FWIW, I don't mean to argue with you. This is just practice for the next time I have this argument with CHOLLY.

I don't want to start the Nikon/Canon insanity again but I noticed that no Canon cameras are mentioned. The Canon 1DX must be included iwth the new 7dll when it is released as a back up.

Then don't try to start it. The reason why no Canon cameras were mentioned is because the original post specifically limited to Nikon bodies. It helps if one would read before responding.
