Then don't read it. No one is forcing you to click on this thread over and over again.

My father was a police officer for over 35 years and my two brothers and I grew up with easy access to loaded guns in the house as did most of the children of other police officers I grew up with. We were taught at very early ages on the proper handling of guns and taught how to fire them by age 5 before entering kindergarten. I was on my high school shooting team and hunted to put meat on the table due to cancer in the family when I was 14 years old and am a Vietnam era Marine so I have a natural respect for the tool that they are and less fear in their ownership and handling than many people. I also understand and share your concern for irresponsible people.
The supreme court has struct down laws that require gun owners to keep their guns unloaded and locked away because it defeats their use for self defense so having a loaded gun with easy access is not a problem for me. Having a loaded gun with easy access but not having control over it does.
I too keep my guns unloaded with trigger locks but then I do not live in a high crime area nor have an occupation that would require it. For those people living in high crime areas need to keep their arms handy but out of reach of young children or irrational people, young or old.
Their will always be people that misuse and are irresponsible with everything from matches and tools to weapons. It is tragic any time a child is harmed but you can't regulate stupidity only punish those that harm others and act irresponsibly. Fire arm safety should be required in grade school and more help given to the mentally ill, not restrict law abiding people the ability to defend themselves.
It is no longer debatable, every study has shown strict gun control results in higher crime. If you want to save the most lives, ban cars, bad doctors, knives and hammers all of which kill and injure more people than guns.
Anyone that does not like the American gun culture should spend some time south of the US border and experience the security that comes with strict gun control. Of course you do not have to go south of the border to experience it, as any big city in the U.S. with strict gun control will do. Chicago has the toughest gun control laws in the country and they also have the highest murder rate in the U.S.
I also believe that if you keep a loaded gun in the house or conceal carry, you should practice with them at least once every month. Gun clubs are good for this and keep guns, loaded or not, secure from untrained hands.

If you want to shoot something not for food, in defense, or made of paper, please use a camera. ;)

How sad is it that we can't even do this? Criminal liability for negligent ownership of guns is on the books in barely half of the states.

Are you saying that it's better not to punish people whose kids kill themselves with negligently secured firearms?

In any case, the list of states that do have these laws is pretty diverse. It includes not only liberal states like California and Illinois but also conservative ones like Utah, Texas, and Tennessee.

Then it has nothing to do with what I said. You'll have to explain why you thought it was necessary to quote me, then.

I'd love to hear which logic books you've read. Can you name one?
