Thanks Ive Fallen. It was our first photo shoot. She was nervous and I did my best to make her feel comfortable. Of course, she doesn't like any of the shots, but I do. That's why I posted a couple, to get input from others. Thanks for looking!

I actually like the tree in 2 and the leaves in 3 both of those bring your eye to the model so the background is not so distracting. '

First what a beautiful model Granddaughter you have...
Brilliant for a first try...
IMHO
When taking portraits light can make or break a photo... Shoot in the shade expose for the sky and use a fill flash for your model
try not to give the young lady the broad light on the nearest side it enlarges the face to give the impression they are a bigger size than they actually are... or round face especially when she has good bone structure... Compare #1 & #3 against #2 to see the dramatic changes in angle and lighting
Try taking a shot downwards to lift the chin of your model and avoid a slight double chin...
try short lighting... to thin the face...
Also have the eyes looking straight not too much white of the eyes...
Hope you don't take this the wrong way and it is only a critique from a fellow portrait learner...

I was expecting to see a naked baby or a splotchy red face wrapped up in a receiving blanket. Nice shots but you waited a long time for the first portrait!

Normally look along the line the nose is pointing to... you will find it gives a better balance to the photo... You did get away with it ( I like it ) but sometimes the whites dominate and take away from the colour so just a general rule you take with a pinch of salt if it looks good in the viewfinder.
Its hard photographing family because no matter what my grand daughter looked like (Finger up her nose) I find every picture perfect.... :lol: The grand parent in us...

Actually I still like the one with the trees framing her face. It seemed to bring the focus to the beautiful face and smile

Very nice indeed and pretty! My only C&C would be you might have picked a more subtle background rather than the bright sky. It tends to make your eye go to the brightest spot... the sky.
You're on the right track, keep it up.

Thanks Fergus. I have thousands of snap shots of my granddaughter over the years. But, this is the first time that she actually wanted me to take her picture, so she posed for me. Made my day!
