Hello, I am a visitor from Canada and stay in Frisco till about the end of Jan.2014. I am very much interested in photographing old abandoned cars and Longhorns close to where I stay (within 1 hour drive). Any ideas? Thanks.

Theo Tan,

From Frisco drive North on HWY 289 to US 82, turn West toward Amarillo, Tx, and on the way you should see some really old farm equipment, a few old cars and trucks, large cattle ranches closer to Amarillo, and outside Amarillo the famous Cadillac Ranch where some buried cars nose first in the soil.

You will be traveling North of the Dallas/Fort Worth area and may drive past some of the largest Feed Lots in the country. If the weather is warm, pinch your nose, it stinks.

North West of Fort Worth, at Wichita Falls you will need to turn right into US 287 to find Amarillo, TX. I suggest you research the points of interest between Dallas and Amarillo. If you get to Amarillo in the early evening be sure you check out the 72 ounce steak, it's free if you can eat it all.

Keep one thing in mind when driving in Texas, nothing is very close. To drive across Texas from Texarkana to El Paso takes a full day and then some. From your location to Amarillo is about 350 miles by car.

DJM,

I will post one here, taken recently at the Port Hueneme Pier in So. Calif.

For others you can click on any of the two links at the bottom of my posts, I just tested the Facebook and it works, the other link is for pictures available for sale.

Thank you for asking.

Your best bet is to go north.....interstate 75 or any other roadway going north.....use as much of the frontage road as you can....and take journeys down some of the FM roads you come across......if you don't have GPS don't venture too far off of the main roads....roads in Texas make no sense most of the time....You can also go the Fort Worth.....the Stockyards.....the have a longhorn cattle drive twice a day and are available all day for viewing......Frisco is very near Dallas.....the best way to describe the difference is this....."In Dallas they call it Sushi......in Fort Worth we call it fish bait".......here is the Stockyards................

Thanks Michael for the info. 350 miles by car is kind of too far. I am looking for something that is approx. within 1 hour drive from Frisco TX. However, I'll keep your information in case I happen to be near the area. Cheers, Theo

Theo, do NOT follow this advice. Interstate 75 begins in Florida and runs north to Michigan. Finding junked cars is easy to do anywhere, longhorns are nowhere near there. Welcome to "Fantasy Land", I hope you enjoy your stay. And take lots of photos, then post some. GL.

Been to the Stockyards, but haven't seen the cattle drive;I plan to go back there. BTW, I've heard about Deep Ellum in Dallas. Any idea?

The closest place to get close ups of longhorns year round is the Ft. Worth Stockyards daily cattle drives. I live south of Ft. Worth and often see them in fields, but I can't pinpoint any right now.

Since you will be in the area until the end of the month try to find a day to visit the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo. It runs Jan. 17 to Feb. 8. They have mobile device apps that provide a wealth of information about specific events.

Enjoy your time in the Metroplex!

Bill

You can go to the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge outside
of Lawton Ok. There they have wild longhorn, buffalo, elk and other wildlife. See link below
