We Pentax users catch a lot of such mess from the younger fanboys of both the Canon and Nikon persuasion. If I decide to answer I ask them who had the earliest SLR sold in the US with an instant return mirror? Pentax. Who built the first pentaprism equipped instant mirror return SLR sold in the US? You guessed it.

Did Nikon or Canon ever build a professional level 120/220 SLR? No, but Pentax did, the 645 series, and the 67 series.

Do Nikon or Canon build a medium format DSLR? No, but Pentax does, the 645D.

Truly, any one who makes the sort of comment the OP mentions is a fool, and hardly deserves an answer. Not just a fool, but an ignorant, insecure fool more concerned with gear than photographs.

Opinions are like assholes, everybody has one!! Do what is right for yourself.

I was displaying some photos at a local craft fair when someone asked "What camera do you use?" I was pretty sure that the only answer they'd find acceptable was either Canon or Nikon, but I use Sony (for historical reasons, mostly). So my answer: "The one I have with me."

Your last sentence is a wonderful rejoinder.

Ok... you asked for it...

Your 'canon user' is an ass, nothing he said was true. So next time you see him or her kick his ass.

Ed will understand this one...

The rest? frrrrrtttttt.

:?: Many, many responses, but while surfing UHH, I ran accross this. It might be in the list of replies, but if not, I am quoting, w/o permission, what the person says, and I believe it:
Once you've met the bare minimum quality, it's not the quality of the equipment that improves your output quality. A better gun won't make you a better gunfighter; a better hammer won't make you a better carpenter; and a better camera won't make you a better photographer.

I think that says it all.
Nope, this says nothing.

A better rifle (not gun) allows you to become more accurate at a longer distance, IF you want to learn. The rifle will not give you courage.
A better hammer, ergonomic or adapted to the job is also a tool that needs to fit the job, I do not see a carpenter using a jewelry hammer pretend to do a good job because it is not the hammer but worker and refuse a better hammer for the job at hand. It hammer will not give you manual skills.
A Better camera will also give you better results IF you are willing to learn. The camera will not give you a vision.

So 'That says it all' indeed says something about your understanding of what adequate tool means for professionals. That is another story, isn't it?

ahhh, but film is archival, digital is not and will never be (a characteristic of both beasts).
and of course the laws of optics are immutable. sooo....that leaves "old" technology.

you know like goodbye cd and hello vinyl?

GH, jeeezzz, you need some anger management dude.
When I get that flack from the fanboys, I look at them square in the eye, and ask, "WHO was the first to scrawl a painting on a cave wall?". When they look at me dumbfounded, with a smug look on my face, I just poke myself in the chest and say, "ME!". And they instantly know, that I know, EVERYTHING !!
End of story. No anger needed.
Now go get some help for that, " little man complex", you guys!

While your experience is not a happy one, there is a blessing hidden in it. Were it not for such boorish, intellectually challenged people the rest of us wouldn't look nearly as good as we do.

Forgive the intellectually challenged. We don't criticize children when they do something hurtful or stupid, we know they don't mean it and they don't understand what they are doing. So forgive the ignorant boorish ones too, they also don't know what they are doing and often don't even realize they did something wrong.

Keep in mind drawing their attention to the behaviour doesn't work either since to just goes over their heads. Add to this it's a way for them to garner some desperately needed attention since generally they're ignored all the time. Alas it attracts the wrong attention but they don't understand that either.

Listen to those who are at your level and they have been saying what is true, that your choice of cameras is at least as good as any other, possibly even better.

As Mark Twain said, "It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt." The Nikon diss removes all doubt.

Your camera is and lenses are very good indeed, even by Canon standards. Nikon owners need not hang their heads in shame and I'm sure we will still be buying and loving Nikons in the years to come.

I have an entry level DSLR, a T3i, and am proud of the pics I take. I'll always buy Canon, but I would never say anything bad about Nikon, especially to an owner of one.

Most likely the person who said that was a soup sandwich of sorts. Pay no mind to what they said. I'm not a professional (student Photographer here), however just chalk it up to the other person not having a lick of common sense.

This also reminds me of an old trauma joke:

A young sailor waits in the sickbay for a Corpsman to return with a new set of sutures after complaining that the sutures being used didn't feel quite right. The Corpsman returns with a hot cup of coffee and proceeds to sit down and watch the sailor for a few minutes. After a moment or two the sailor complains and says:
"Doc, I thought you were coming back with better sutures?"
to which the Corpsman replies: "well the best ones I have are holding that wound of yours shut, so when you are finished complaining I'll be finished with my coffee and resume stitching you up"

The young sailor never said a word after. LOL

How many people speak about things that they are clueless about. Nikon, Canon, Pin Hole in shoe box. It is, as you said, the cameraMAN/Woman. Let the comments be flushed to where they belong.

Go the Seinfeld route...if someone says your equipment sucks, say "Yeah, well I had sex with your wife!".
