Thanks. I appreciate all the information. I have decided to stick with my notebook for my vacation picture backup and processing. The ipad seems very cool, and I may be tempted to get one, but not for my photo backup.

I haven't started looking at anything specific yet, but I will certainly look at that. I wonder if there would be an advantage to getting a pad that runs Windows 8?

I would get a NetBook with 320gb hard drive. Otherwise you would just need to keep a bunch of SD cards. The "notepads" or "tablets" just don't have enough memory without a bunch of SD or MicroSD cards.

Does anyone know of a notepad that would be useful for backing up photos while traveling? I shoot in RAW and take hundreds of photos so I would need a large capacity. I would need to be able to transfer images from my CD card to the notepad and then transfer the images to my desktop computer at home. I would also like to be able to review and delete images that are not keepers. I would do my post processing at home on my desktop. I do have a notepad which is good for this, but i would rather carry something lighter if possible.
Thanks,
Virginia

There are cheaper ones out there, maybe you should consider something along this line.

Virginia, I have an iPad, but would not consider storing photos there. For one thing, it's only 16GB (I use 2 16Gb cards in my camera), but more importantly, I believe the tablets have to resize the photos as it stores them. This could mean that image taken with a D800 at 36mp wouldn't make a good 8X10 print if "run through" a tablet.

I'm not sure of what I'm saying, but I would encourage you to research it. I just know that photos I've downloaded to my iPad, then copied to my PC for work in Lightroom just don't have a lot of resolution.

No question that the IPad resizes images .....

There was one that was offered by Alzo photo. But I could not find it. In fact the direct links were gone to the main page. I did see many of the items are still on Amazon and purchaseable. I could not find their storage device. I thought it was 239, took the cards and I think, hand a viewer window. But alas........maybe your search techinques are better.

I use a 13" Macbook Pro that contains the largest, most RAM, and video card/graphics processor available from Mac and a 2/4 terabyte firewire G Drive external drive for backup, and I have a copy of Lightroom installed for review of my images.

I use a card reader to download my images from the camera to a folder on the Macbook's hard drive and I also send a copy to a folder on the G Drive and that way I have two copies (redundancy is the watchword). I do not remove any of these folders for some time after arriving home, only maybe a month or two for insurance, and then only after copying to my main Mac's hard drive and also two external hard drives and placing everything in the Lightroom data base.

Consider a Hyperdrive Colorspace UDMA with an SSD drive of what ever capacity you need. It'll download from your CF cards, has a screen for quick edits, and is compact. You won't be doing any color correction on it, but it'll meet your storage needs. When home plug into your computer via USB and download your stored images. B&H and ADORAMA sell it.

For that price, I would buy a small NetBook computer with 320gb internal plus a 1T portable drive!!
