Notepad for photo backup and editing?

Does anyone know of a notepad that would be useful for backing up photos while traveling? I shoot in RAW and take hundreds of photos so I would need a large capacity. I would need to be able to transfer images from my CD card to the notepad and then transfer the images to my desktop computer at home. I would also like to be able to review and delete images that are not keepers. I would do my post processing at home on my desktop. I do have a notepad which is good for this, but i would rather carry something lighter if possible.
Thanks,
Virginia

Have you considered the iPad Air? I use mine a lot for pictures.

I haven't started looking at anything specific yet, but I will certainly look at that. I wonder if there would be an advantage to getting a pad that runs Windows 8?

Using multiple cards with safe storage container might be better. That way everything is not on one device.
Just a thought!

I do have enough cards to last throughout a trip, but I would like to have an additional backup in case of loss or failure of a card.

I'm a windows guy at home, but you couldn't pry my iPad out of my hands of you tried. With iTunes on a Windows machine, the interface between Windows and iPad is easy. Plus iPads back up to the cloud with a Wifi connection, so you can't lose anything as long as you backup regularly.

If you do go the iPad route, make sure you purchase AppleCare+ at the time of purchase. It gives you full two years of tech support with Apple, plus if you accidentally drop your iPad it gives you a replacement for $49 twice during that two year period. It's well worth the $99 charge.

Do you know how much backup capacity I could get with the iPad?

I use a 13" Macbook Pro that contains the largest, most RAM, and video card/graphics processor available from Mac and a 2/4 terabyte firewire G Drive external drive for backup, and I have a copy of Lightroom installed for review of my images.

I use a card reader to download my images from the camera to a folder on the Macbook's hard drive and I also send a copy to a folder on the G Drive and that way I have two copies (redundancy is the watchword). I do not remove any of these folders for some time after arriving home, only maybe a month or two for insurance, and then only after copying to my main Mac's hard drive and also two external hard drives and placing everything in the Lightroom data base.

iPads come with 5GB of backup to the cloud for free. That won't be enough if you'll have lot's of pictures. You can add additional backup in the cloud for $20/year for 20GB. You can buy more on the fly if you need it. It's very intelligently executed.

ETA: I happen to be one of the top contributors in the world on Apple's hosted iPad forum. If you ever get in trouble, you can PM me for assistance.

I use an Asus Zenbook, it's an ultrabook which is Intel's answer to the MacBookAir. It's light, about 3lbs, and very thin and portable.

I use external hard drives to keep all my pictures. If you used a notebook and one external HD, you'd have two copies of all the pictures, which would be safer. A 1TB WD passport is less than $100, so you can copy all your pictures to it before you sort.

You may not always want to take the time to do the culling while you're traveling...

I have a Toshiba notebook thatis slim and lightweight and does everything I want. I have copies of Lightroom. Elements, and Photomatix Pro on it although I save my serious editing for my desktop computer. I am beginning to think I should just stick to my notebook for photo backup and processing away from home even though the size and lighter weight of the iPad is appealing. However, I may decide i want an iPad for other reasons.

All of my magazines (photo, car, watches etc., ) are now on my iPad. Nothing like plugging in headphones, listening to some great music at Starbucks with a hot cup of coffee and read the latest Digital Photo Pro!

Virginia, I have an iPad, but would not consider storing photos there. For one thing, it's only 16GB (I use 2 16Gb cards in my camera), but more importantly, I believe the tablets have to resize the photos as it stores them. This could mean that image taken with a D800 at 36mp wouldn't make a good 8X10 print if "run through" a tablet.

I'm not sure of what I'm saying, but I would encourage you to research it. I just know that photos I've downloaded to my iPad, then copied to my PC for work in Lightroom just don't have a lot of resolution.
