I have twin grandkids....... girl (very artistic but a bossy little bitch) & boy...... I'm thinking about buying them canon SX 50's and taking them on a fun little road trip......Is this a good decision? all comments welcome. My wife thinks I'm crazy.

Too young for an SX50. Give them a cheap camera to learn on, unless you have money to burn. At that age they'll trash it. I agree with your wife!

good comment...these kids live in a pussy world...play dates....over protection...don't get a bruise or scrape...play "virtual" games..... it drives me nuts...you don't have to buy them a camera provide them something that makes them bond with live humans...... baseball bats, tennis rackets, marbles, anything but vid games and xbox xxx version 3.6...I'm sure xbots are fun to play...but it sucks all humanity and social skills from the young...........jmho I could be wrong.

Is that the children's fault ?

I think that giving each of them a cheap camera to play with when they are out with gramps, mom and dad is a great idea. It's amazing what 7 year olds see that the adults don't see, even though they are in the same place at the same time, seeing the same thing. I've seen children take pictures of leaves, bugs, and ant hills. They have no preconceived opinions, are excited to see those little things in front of them and are excited to show them to the adults. I wish we adults weren't as incumbered.

Hi JC56

My wife agrees with your wife.

PS I do see your point! maybe not a SX50 but something smaller.

As a three-time great grandpa, I'd go along with spending less for their cameras (they probably have no appreciation for quality stuff), and definitely get them out of their current world and let them experience the real one. Good luck!!

good idea; don't go too from home, just in case something occurs. A local state park with camping is a good start.

And which twin will get the "good" camera? Unless the cameras are identical, there will be friction between the kids.

I don't think they're too young for cameras. I'd agree that it would make more sense to start them with something cheaper and easier to use, though. A photo camping trip sounds awesome to me. I still remember taking my first grandson to Lake Berryessa for a week. We fished and photographed. Brought back a LOT more photos than fish!

I agree, human interaction is good, but living in a large area such as St Louis, you need to be very carefull with whom you associate. I have moved multiple times in my life, from a small town of 450 to Atlanta. Believe me, people are different everywhere. There is good and bad everywhere, but grandpa is limited on what he can do, so his choices are his to make, and if they work, great!!! Go for it gramps!

Sounds wonderful but I would not get them the sx 50. I bought my grand kids the Nikon Coolpix S 31. It is geared towards kids, easy to use, has video and can go underwater. Also I gave them an online photography class from
www.jessicasprague.com. She is a wonderful instructor and has 3 boys of her own. It is typically run in June and July
