Congrats and enjoy!

A photo of it, or a photo taken with it, would be good to see
in the thread.

One step up in ISO is a lot cheaper than a 50mm 1.4, then again he will get a little bit more bokeh than the 1.8.

I little more Bokeh for Christmas. Please Santa.

Pappy, I also bought myself a Christmas present. I am giving my Nikon D80 to my son and I bought a Nikon D800 with the 24-120 f4 lens. Just got it a couple of days a go. Nice to see there are other "guys" who do this also.

I thought I would buy myself a Christmas present this year. So I sold my 50mm 1.8 and ordered the 50mm 1.4. can't wait to try it ot on my family this Christmas.

Pappy

I'm happy for you. Enjoy the 1.4, you picked the right time to purchase it! My present to myself is a new Kenmore vacuum cleaner on sale at Sears. I hate to admit it but I am actually stoked to have it.

I did the same and ordered a Panasonic 14-140 lens for micro 4/3 and a Tamron 18-270 for my Canon Rebel. You got a "prime cut" and I went for "zoom Zoom"

I was just using my 1.8 this morning, I've had it since 1987 and it still works great. I think the 1.4 has the USM and probably forks faster and smoother, not sure because I don't have one and of course I'm jealous of anyone that does. lol

But if you do get a tie, you can take a great picture of it!

Happy for you Blue SPark.

Is there anyone out there who lives in GA near Blue Spark? Perhaps you can let him do your floors the day after Christmas!

Hey, he's stoked!

You must have an excess of money to spend. How many times will you be shooting a f1.4. Very little light gain between the two lenses and no depth of field. You did jot s ay what lens you sold and thewn bought.

Ah, those are the best kind of Christmas presents. As a matter of fact I'm shopping for a Sigma 10-20mm, for myself, isn't this fun?
One thought though, I like to take a new lens out and play with it to get a feeling for it before I use it in conditions like an important event like Christmas. Good luck and Merry Christmas!

Had the 1.8 got the 1.4. World of difference. much better in low light. Better bokeh in portraits. Just a better lens.

The Jump from 1.4 to 1.2, on the other hand I don't think is worth the cost.

Going from 1.8 to 1.4 a couple hundered.

1.4 toi 1.2 over a thousand.

That is the best way to do it. I have given suggestions on what I would like, and have received items that I didn't like just because they were more expensive and were thought to be better.

I agree... for most lenses. But the nifty 50 is sweet right out of the box. And, since Pappy is already used to the 1.8, there should only be joy come Christmas morning!!

I just did the same thing. I traded in my Sony NEX-5N body with the optional EVF (I don't use it anymore, I've got the NEX-7 if I want to change lenses) along with my Sony RX-100 on the RX-100II. I like the idea of focusing the MKII using an EVF & I've already got one for my RX 1 (I hate framing with an LCD). I got a REAL good deal on the trade through B&H.

John.....Just curious, what does the 1.4 give you that the 1.8 doesn't? Can't one step up in ISO give you the same thing? If I'm mistaken I'd like to know.

If it is a Canon lens then he got a much better build as well as the stop difference.
