I'm a long-time 35mm shooter but relatively new to digital, and I'm still trying to figure out a few technical things. I recently bought a used Canon EOS 20D, which I assume has an APS-C sensor. While looking for a longer zoom lens for it I found the Tamron 75-300 f/4-5.6 at a good price on Amazon. The description says it will work with Canon EF mounts. My camera manual says the camera will accept ALL EF and EF-S series lenses. However, when I checked the compatibility feature on Amazon, it says this lens is NOT compatible with the 20D. Is that ONLY because the lens is for full-frame cameras, or is there some other issue? I can deal with the cropping issues, if that's the only issue. But is there some other reason this lens is not compatible with my camera? Will this lens not mount on my 20D? Are the electronics not compatible? Is the mirror going to slap against the back of the lens?

I used the search section here at UHH, as well as Google, Canon and Tamron and can't find any specifics. Hoping there are a few Canon shooters (or at least ONE) that can answer this for me.

Thanks in advance for any information!

If the Tamron has an EOS mount it will work with any Canon EOS xxD camera except the 10D. Keep in mind the 20D is very long in the tooth. While you can still get some nice shots from it, it capabilities are very limited compared to more current offerings.

As the manual states, your camera will work with ALL EF as well as EFS lenses, not a problem, use it as you wish, it will do no harm to your camera. Just remember that ANY lens you put on that body will have an effective focal length that is 1.6 times the listed focal length. A 75-300mm lens will effectively become a 120-480mm lens on that camera due to its smaller sensor that can only capture a portion of the lens' projected image.
A 1.6x body does not change your focal length,it changes the angle of view. It does not make your focal length change,it only crops the image.

And what part of "effective focal length" don't you understand???

If anyone understands that, MT Shooter does. Perhaps he should have been more explicit and said something like the "35mm equivalent angle of view" but I don't think what he said implies the focal length changed.

It doesn't effectively become your focal length as you stated. What part don't you understand ??

HI DMBImage, I am not being a jerk here but why not call Canon? They will give you the correct answer to your question.

I doubt very much that Canon will give the OP any advice on the compatibility of third party lenses, but if the Tamron has an EF mount it will definitely, positively, 100% certain, mount on a 20D. This thread has really gone on way too long for such a simple straightforward question. The 20D straight through to the 70D all have the same mount. It supports EF and EFs lens mounts from Canon and from third parties like Tamron and Sigma.

While I'm not familiar with the 20D,

Since you're not familiar why waste time by providing an uninformed answer?

Well I talk to Canon all the time about my Camera with my Sigma Lenses. They do talk about them with me allot. How can one be so closed minded about that info without trying to talk to them first off. Also he could call Tamron too and they would be happy to help him with this predicament.

Generally Canon does not provide support info for third party products, but even if they do in this case, he doesn't need to contact them. The Canon 20D will mount the same EF and EFs Canon and third party lenses as any other crop frame Canon EOS body with the exception of the 10D. A Tamron lens with an Canon EF mount will work just fine with the Canon 20D. The lens will fit!!!
