I think I got close to Graham Smith's signature.

Well almost. I was just waiting for her to turn round to get a picture of her full outfit and then the gust of wind struck so I was ready with the shutter press for the unexpected.

I don't think it's a great photo technically compared to most of yours on UH, but I think it's the best by far that I have taken.

Incidentally am I allowed to post original to see if I have made the ideal crop?

I am still reeling with all the positive feedback and am more and more determined to persevere with this fantastic hobby.

Phil, there is no law in the UK that prevents you photographing any one in a public place, including children, and using the pictures for any purpose provided that you don't make money from them without first obtaining consent or you don't defame the person. Obviously photographing children can be a sensitive subject these days.

You can post the original as long as it is a jpg. Convert to jpg if it is in raw.

I wonder how old this girl is. If she is a minor, are there any legal problems with posting a photo like this of her without her parents permission?

I have to admit that this was my first reaction to the picture. Even if not a minor, it is still a rather 'personal' picture. While I wouldn't say it was illegal, it is probably not a photo that the lady in question would want made public. How would we feel if this were our wife, or daughter?

Not trying to be a killjoy here, I just think that this is sailing a bit close to the line, that's all.

I did think that at 1st before posting but the 4 girls all had a laugh about it, "Dorothy" herself in particular especially as she'd gone to the trouble to dress up.

OK. Here's the original. Could I have cropped it any better?

Hello Phil, personally I wouldn't have cropped it at all. But that's just my preference, I like to include the "environment".
I often get told "this is a distraction, that is a distraction" but to crop too much removes any story.

I know what you mean Graham but I felt that you can see that it's a high street and that the rather bland sky, the remainder of the cars and the bit of the Tesco Express (formerly F.W. Woolworth) didn't add anything to the story.

To me the whole picture is of a very mundane High Street with the incongruity of Dorothy complete with ruby slippers and wind blown out of control skirt that brings to mind Kansas and the tornado. All in Ruislip :-)

Graham, who maybe stretching it a bit far.

I notice that you shot this at 18mm. A wide to short telephoto would be my choice with VR to help in lower light. If you want to shoot street a long telephoto can be very counter productive, it intimidates people, they are less wary of a smaller lens. The best street images are taken when you are in among the action, as it were. Having said all that although the Tamron is quite an old design it had fair write ups. Try to find a VR lens.

Graham

I've checked and the VR lens is probably beyond my budget.
So I'll repeat my questions.
Is the quality of my image the best I can expect from the Sony Kit lens?
And will the Tamron 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di II be much of an improvement over the kit lens?
This Tamron lens I've seen for £139.
As I said, I have a very limited budget.

That's a tough call Phil as I don't know anything about the kit lens but obviously the Tamron will give you and extended zoom range and Tamron have seldom made a bad lens, in fact most are pretty good. So, in short, I would guess that the Tamron will be an improvement.

Well done on all counts. You captured the moment and cropped it beautifully to capture the "Marilyn Monroe" aspect, along with the guy's reaction.

Thanks RMM.
I still can't get over all this accolade for what to all intents and purpose was a serendipitous moment.

I just have to find a decent affordable lens to continue along these lines.
