I am thinking to buy a refurbished Canon EF 24-104mm f/4L IS USM directly from Canon to save some money. I have never purchase any refurbished products. Anyone has any experience or comments? Greatly appreciated.

I have bought most of my Canon gear refurb from both Canon and Adorama....only one dud: a 14mm f/2.8L I sent back for an immediate refund. Before buying direct from Canon, check Adorama, they are sometimes cheaper, except when Canon has a 15-20% off sale (which they are having now on certain items)...Canon will also charge sales tax which Adorama may not, depending on where you live. The warrantees are one year, whichever you buy from. Go for it...I expect both will have some great deals between now and Christmas.

"Refurbished" is a term that can only be applied to a new lens that has been out of the box, but never registered by an end user. They are usually display lenses, or occasionally, a new lens returned just after purchase. Refurbs are actually inspected more thoroughly than 'just off the line' new lenses. Most previously sold lenses have to be designated as 'used'. Only the manufacture can entitle a lens as Refurbished.

I always buy refurb when I can and have never had a regret.
When pricing items, at least in CA. we pay sales tax from Canon, so that could be a factor.
If the 24-105 is for a crop camera, also look closely at the EFs 15-85.
Good luck

Nikonian, thanks for the good information. That will be good to know when it comes to my next lens purchase, very probably a "long shooter".

I have gotten several 'refurbished' lens direct from Canon. The three most recent are; EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM, EF 70-200mm f/4L, and EF 24-105mm f/4L. The only one that even looked like it was used at all was the 70-200mm f/4L. There were three or four places where the paint had chipped off. They were very small and only noticeable if you took time to look for them. A toothpick and a dab of touch up paint fixed that.

Never had any problem with any of the 'refurbished' lens from Canon.

I bought the Canon 17-40 mm Refurbed from Canon and like it very much so. All the Refurbed lenses are overstocked inventory that could not be sold, so it was returned to Canon. They are still brand new and Canon really gives them a good going over to resell to the Public along with a full warranty too.

Refurbished is my first choice. Canon, unlike Nikon, now offers a one-year warranty on it's refurbs.

Not all are used out of box and not registered, Majority of Canon's refurbs are over stock that did not sell and Canon goes through them with fine tooth comb and applies a 1year warranty to the gear. When someone buys them from Canon.
