I've been using a Canon 50d for about a year and a half. I've bought a couple of lenses for it, including the Tamron 18-270. which I think is quite a lens for the money. My friend, who owns an enviable inventory of Canon top-of-the-f-line equip., is trying to get me into a full frame body, i.e., Canon 5d with an L lens, which does not accept any of my present lenses. Claims that I will love the full frame plus the much improved sensors -is it worth it? I do mostly travel and people photography.

Your invaluable input is much appreciated!!

Sounds like you really like what you have now. What is full-frame going to do to your images? (Besides make them more expensive?)

You know that one size doesn't fit all - it's personal preference and how you use your equipment. Try borrowing your friend's camera for a day or rent one with an L lens to see if it really makes a difference to you. For some it will and others no. You'll get much varied opinions here that will not be as helpful as just trying it yourself.

Thanks a lot for your comments. I understand that I will have more of the picture I shot, plus the 5d sensors will give me much better color rendition.

Excellent idea. He does have 3 5d bodies, I'm sure he would not mlind. Problem is the idea of borrowing over 3 thousand dollars worth of equipment is quite a responsibility. God forbid anything were to happen to it.

Anyway, I'll give it some thought.

Thanks for your time.

Perhaps he would let you use it on a joint photo shoot so he could explain the pro's and cons of it, and also take away the reponsibility of any damage for boths peace of mind .

You know, Pete, after replying to one of the replies I had the same thought. I am just going to go with him and that way I'l feel a little more comfortable.

That was a good idea, again, thanks!

I would highly recommend you go with the upgrade. When you see the difference in your pictures you will not be disappointed. When you enlarge your pictures you will be blown away.

I know, that's exactly what my friend says. He is just in a different financial situation than I, so dishing out 3 grand for me is not quite as easy.

Anyway, I'm going to take one of his cameras and give it a whirl.

Thanks for your reply

Monte, let me approach this very differently.
Do you know your friend well? Do you trust his opinion.
He has been in your shoes more than once(as have we all).
I would trust a close friend way before a bunch of strangers that don't know you from Adam. Do you think your friend would steer you wrong?

I assume you don't mean a 5d(as old as your 50), but at least a 5Dll or lll ?
Your 50 is a half a decade old. Even the 5dll will give you a more than 30% increase in much better pixels and better pixel quality. And if your 50 breaks down, it no longer has Canon support, they won't even clean it. Many reasons to by a new camera, and they have nothing to do with how you use it or how good you are.
On those travel shots, when I travel, it costs me a lot of money. Every now and then I even get a whopper of a keeper. I would NOT want that shot to be a noisy 15 mp shot.
My advice, talk to your friend and let him guide you. I don't think he's on commission. Don't buy it if you don't think it's right, otherwise go for it. Just sell all that glass you can't use and buy some nice L lenses.

Monte, why does that question always whip the sharks into a feeding frenzy ? They all shoot with d800's and 5dmklll's and top-of-line glass. I just wonder how they ever justified it ?!

I shoot with a simple yet effective Nikon D3100 and I don't have to justify any lens or whatever I buy with anyone.
I work for a neighbor on his farm and that's my money to do with however I please (that's part of the reason I do it, other then it gets me out of the house and I enjoy it for the most part)
