I like to carry extra SD cards and just swap them out as I fill them. I got in trouble once when I was traveling with a portable hard drive and did not transfer properly and lost several hundred images when I emptied the card. Have been extra care full since. I do carry a laptop and transfer nightly and keep the images on the cards as I go. Cards are very reasonable price wise these days and you can buy them everywhere.

Going to Uganda and would like to back up my pics also. My fear is my camera getting stolen with all my pics on it.

This is a question I have been pondering for an upcoming trip - and so I have been searching online today. This looks like a good option: "Photo-Safe II". It automatically downloads photos from your memory cards. And while in theory you could then reformat and re-use your cards, I would suggest using this as a back-up until getting home and downloading onto your computer! Always good to have the images in two places. $150 for 500GB - cheaper than having a second set of memory cards, which I was considering as an option (using a tablet to copy and paste to make a duplicate of each card each day).

Looking further, this unit does not have outstanding reviews on Amazon.... so still searching for a good answer. Still might just bring extra memory cards and use a small tablet to copy and paste to create a second copy of each card. Another option is the Seagate Wireless Backup drive - it can receive and store files over its own wireless network - so could probably download from a tablet or even from one of the new DSLRs with wireless capability. Still have to consider whether this is a much better option than just deciding to bring the laptop along!

I usually take a number of SD cards and place them in a special pocket as they are used.

I would use many 8Gig cards and change when full If you can find 8 gig cards
and make sure you keep the cards on your person when traveling, luggage is so often lost.
Never keep all of your eggs in one basket!!!!

I bought a Photo Safe II.
It is a bit tricky to use since there is not a clear indication that it is actually uploading.....maybe I'll get used to it.
It does have all the card slots and will charge with a phone charger. It was about $140 as I remember.

When we went to Italy, I used Eye-Fi 8GB SD cards in 2 different cameras, one in a D90 and the other in a P500. Each broadcast on Wi-Fi, backing up every picture or movie on the micro SD card of the Android phone in my shirt pocket, including metadata. :)

I also have a Wolverine card reader with hard drive and I never format a card until I have two copies. If I were traveling and didn't want to carry a laptop, I'd take the Wolverine AND enough memory cards to cover the whole trip.

Don't get anything to backup SD card. I went on a Med. cruise and took 4 SD cards with me. I took over 8000 pictures and had no need to backup anything. Save your money.

you must be shooting in jpeg and were using 8 to 16g cards.
I shoot raw and will need more cards then that to hold 8K photos. I must say you shoot one heck of a lot of images. Hope they were all great

Have you given any consideration to an Eye-fi card?
