Here's my best American flag, and apparently AOL and Patch liked it too since they used it without my permission for July 4th, 2010.

Not much makes me any more upset than to see a flag flying in complete tatters for no good reason. That is what I saw flying over this Wal-Mart store. I started by calling the store and got a succession of some rather rude people who couldn't have cared less about their flag. I demanded it be changed on the spot, was basically laughed at. It took me over an hour and finally got in touch with Wal-Mart headquarters in Bentonville Arkansas. Luckly the person there believed me when I told them that I was prepared to stay there for however long it took and would let the whole world know about this disrespectful display. An hour and forty five minutes later the flag was changed.

Outstanding WRR,
I too have family that served proudly most branches repsented within the family. I am a firefighter and one thing that will get us going is to see a tatered flag not properly retired. There are even veteran service groups that will respectfully retired flags. Oh btw when the flags on the trucks are discoverd to be torn then they are replaced.

As a USN veteran, son of a USN Vet, father of a USN Vet, firefighter and WTC worker - my respect and honor for our flag is very high. I really appreciate seeing posts like this! I'm working on a "Flags of the World Tade Center" collecting all the flags I have photographed over ten+ years at WTC. Not sure if it'll be a collage, composite triptych or what format, but there's a lot of flags onsite. But it will be the proudest photo/print of my life.
>> "Myrtle Beach" FYI - whenever I get a shot like that I flip it horizontal so that the star field is upper left per protocol. Not complaining, just a tip.
Thnx all - regardless of composition, exposure etc - every proud photo is an honor to our country, veterans, citizens.

There us a country song referring to the old tatter flag I believe, it depends on what it stands for in your perception of what it means.

Yes, it's called Ragged Old Flag. It really is worth taking the a minute to watch the video.

I had a similar incident with Wal-Mart. However, the manager of the store took immediate action and replaced the flag. That was six or seven years ago and I've never seen a tattered flag at that store again!!

Nice to know that I'm not the only one that has forced Wal-Mart to action concerning their flag. In my post I said "flag flying in complete tatters for no good reason" and after reading some of the post after that I felt maybe I should explain what I mean. I expect a place like WalMart to always have a pristine flag on display and I can't think of any 'good reason' why it should be otherwise for them.

The flip side is someone like my good friend that lives out in the boonies a few miles from here. He is a viet nam vet, bears the scars to prove it, both physically and mentally. He starts everyday by stepping out on his front porch and saying the Pledge of Allegiance in front of his little flag. If you stop to visit, be prepared to do the same. This little flag is old, dirty and fairly well tattered. He brought it back from the war with him. It is his most prized possession and when you stand beside him saying the pledge, you can just feel the pride and respect. Nothing makes me feel any prouder than to gaze upon this old flag, tatters be damned.

I totally agree with you. I have also called businesses where the flag was flying in shreds. All but one took care of the problem and erected a new flag promptly. As much as I hate seeing tattered flags flying, it irks me even more when businesses don't even fly a flag. In my opinion, lots of people have died defending what our flag stands for, and they probably wouldn't even have a business if it wasn't for that!! Oh boy, don't get me going! Hahaha!

GOOD FOR YOU!!! If I was there, I would have been standing right next to you...

My father (dec'd) was a Navy man and instilled in me the "respect for our American flag." It really hurts to see when people are disrespectful of "Our America" like this. I don't think flag etiquette is even known by the American people any more. Sad.

Sharing mine...honored with 1st place at 2010 County Fair and Honorable Mention at the 2010 Nebraska State Fair. (I'm glad someone noticed~) 'Nuff said.
